I’ve noticed consistently that when I start my console first thing in the morning from instant on (also keep my games and apps up to date) that Ill always have several in the “update” section. So I’ve been hit with the bug that games aren’t updating when
set to (the exact opposite of your issue). Every time I will then see these same games and apps the next day in the queue section as being finished updating so they DO update overnight a day later by themselves.

Can you try to uninstall the app from his Ipad, enable the "Join multiplayer games" setting and download it from the App Store again please?

It is possible that the game is not updating properly the settings, and thus crashing.

Please update us on the issue.

Sadly there is no separate way to display games, in the My games and Apps where a game will be excluded from display.

I actually keep my games on a separate hard drive and when i unplug my hard drive the games are saved on it but not on the console. That may be the better option for you.
