Hi,

Does your friend have some sort of secondary storage device (USB Flash Drive, External hard drive)? If so, have him remove his primary hard drive, use the secondary storage device and download just the content that's coming up with this sort of error and see
if he's able to play then without receiving this error.

Try that out and see if it works.

Anything that is not an authorized hard drive (official MS brand) is a violation of the terms of service and can put you at risk for being banned. Since that is not an authorized hard drive it would not be recommended.

 

can I still use if for storing my kids games if they don't play them online?

 

Technically speaking, it should still work like a Microsoft hard drive except for the ability to play original Xbox games, so it would work for that.

I get all of my games from xbox.com (my kids wreak cds) I dont have any original xbox games I have 75 of the almost 100 games (and counting) I purchased on my 250g hard drive but im out of space I just want to use that hard drive as storage to separate my
kids games but I don't want to get banned for it

 

It's not recommended to use anything other than an official MS hard drive. That is really the only way you can get another hard drive without risking being banned.

"must not function differently in any way than official Microsoft certified hardware" means the hard drive cannot have any other system files or anything that would allow it to run any differently than an official hard drive. When you purchase a knock-off,
you really don't know what you're getting. They do have the potential to cause problems down the road.

 

would hooking it up to my computer and formatting it then to the xbox and formatting it again be good then?

 

Xbox hard drives are not meant to be seen by a PC. So if you format it on a PC the Xbox will no longer recognize it as an Xbox hard drive.

You can format via the console, but if it's a knock-off there could still be issues with it.

I've seen people have freezing issues, or the hard drive causes the console to not function properly while it's plugged in. It's possible it could work fine, but you never know. If you do have any issues with it, Microsoft will not fix it.
