Second hand external hard drive for Xbox one?

ive purchased a second hand western digital my passport external hard drive. I'm assuming it's formatted for pc media files will I be able to reformat it for Xbox one? I've read a lot about reformatting from Xbox to pc but not the other way around.

Xbox One will not recognize second external hard drive

Hello All:

I have an xbox one. I have been using two external hard drives with it. Recently the xbox stopped recognizing that the second hard drive was connected. I figured the hard drive quit working, so I purchase a new 4tb Seagate Xbox External Hard Drive to
use. I plugged it in and the xbox did not recognize it either. I have done hard reboots, switch usb ports, switch cables, etc... and nothing that I do gets the xbox to recognize either the original second external hard drive that was working perfectly or
the new second external hard drive. Even when I remove the first external hard drive, and hard reboot, the xbox will still not recognize the either the new external hard drive or the drive that had worked well in the past as a second external hard drive.
I figure something is wrong with my xbox one. Please advise what I should do.

So if my games are on a external hard drive and i have a second xbox one i'm safe?

 

Anytime you plug in an external hard drive that's not already formatted for the Xbox, it'll ask if you want to configure it for use on the console. So you should be able to.

 

It is possible to reformat nearly any external USB storage device for the Xbox One. Just plug it in and you should get a prompt. Keep in mind that
reformatting will erase any and all data currently on the hard drive.

If you plan on using it to store game installations, the drive must meet these

two requirements:

• It is at least 256GB.
• It connects with USB 3.0

If the drive does not meet the above requirements, it will simply be used as basic media storage (movies, pictures, music).

 

All you have to do is plug it in, and it'll guide you through the reformatting process. It'll ask you if you want to use it for games or music/movies.
