  1. Seagate Backup Plus 2TB External Hard Media Only

I bought a brand new Seagate Backup Plus 2TB external hard drive to use with my Xbox One but it doesn't work. It only shows up as a media storage device, even though it meets all of the requirements to be used to store games. After spending an hour and a
half on the phone with Xbox support they told me to make a post with pictures on the forums, so here it is. I would really like to get this sorted out so I can have more than 15 games on my Xbox at once. Thank you.

Which External Hard Drive Should I Buy?

I purchased the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive STDR2000100 Black last week at Best Buy for $99. It takes 2 seconds to setup and works like a charm! Happy gaming!

Media Player and Seagate Backup Plus Portable detection issue

I recently got a 2TB Seagate Backup Plus Portable drive as a media storage, the XB1 detects it fine, Media Player will INITIALLY recognize it and play stably...Problem is....

When I shift to a game then shift back to Media Player, Media Player no longer recognizes the drive. XB1 still sees it, Media Player does not, and the only method for Media Player to once again recognize the Seagate is a HARD REBOOT.

    Hello MetalGear Squid,

I have seen quite a few post about the same problem. I have suggested some major steps to other people in hopes that it would clear up the issue. You know, things like the now famous "How
to restart or power cycle your Xbox One console
" and suggesting they delete and "re-add" their account/profile back to their
Xbox. Or, following up with "Troubleshoot external storage detection on Xbox One" . But, I'm not sure if that worked for them. However,
some one was kind enough to post some positive information about removing the Media Player app from his Xbox to fix the problem with "unable to format external
    drive as games/apps drive
    " .

Let us know if this helped. With games now between 40-50GB plus, managing space on an Xbox has become a real pain. My Xbox One is now at 98% and I'm going to have to get an external drive soon.

  6. MetalGear Squid,

A big thanks for following up and letting us know how things stand. But, sorry to hear that you are still having the problem with the external hard drive. At this point, we just need to double check the basics. If you plug the Seagate Backup Plus 2TB into
your PC does it works? If yes, then the next question is when you plug in another drive, i.e. a different USB 3.0 external hard drive into the Xbox, does it recognize that drive and will it let you "Format storage device"? If not, then we have confirmed, for
whatever reasons (hardware and/or software), that the problem lies with the Xbox.

I hope you will be able to gives this a try. and that you will follow up again to lets us know what happen. I would like to get to the bottom of this issue, and I know you want it fixed But, we really need to be sure before taking any further steps.

  7. Hello again,

I've tried multiple hard drives and they all work on my pc but when it comes to my Xbox one they all have the same issue. Not sure what else I can do if the problem is the Xbox.

    Thanks again.

    MetalGear Squid,

    If this was me, I can only see four more possible options left;

    1) Preform some hardcore drive surgery in hopes of isolating and fixing the cause of these problems. In part, and in an attempt to figure out what's going on here, I repurposed an old 500GB HD and a new aftermarket USB 3.0 enclosure, and using my Windows
10 PC and the Disk Management utility, I deleted and re-created the disk partition and reformatted the drive. This current configuration of this repurposed 500GB HD with new USB 3.0 enclosure was able to be recognized and formatted for games on my Xbox One
S and seems to be working with no problems.

    2) If you feel comfortable doing it, preform an "Xbox One Offline System Update" (click on I NEED TO UPDATE MY CONSOLE OFFLINE and follow the steps). However,
I consider this a long shot, but then again, I said if this was me and I would do it.

    3) Clear there is some discrepancy in the way a PC handles these drives and the way the Xbox One deals with them. So, is it time to send your Xbox in for "Device repair"?

    4) And this is why I am glad that you have continue to follow up with your post, I hope that a member of the Official Staff will see and read this complete tread and provide some very need feedback.

Despite your understandable frustration, I continue to wish you good luck and good gaming,
