    Games pass and live gold confusion

    Game Pass is a subscription service to get access to games including Sea of Thieves.

    Gold is a subscription service to be able to play online. Sea of Thieves is an online only game and would require gold to be able to play it.

    Unless he own Sea of Thieves by itself, he needs both.

    Thank you for taking the time to post this on the Xbox Forums. We understand that you are inquiring about needing a subscription to play multiplayer games online on your Windows 10 PC.

    Any Windows 10 Edition variant or any Xbox Play Anywhere titles that you own, do not require you to have an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play online.

    However, if you are playing on an Xbox Console, the subscription will be necessary for you to play games online with your buddies.

    Xbox Insider hub problem with network try again.

    If you're trying to play the Xbox Insider version of Sea of Thieves, then be aware that this was the closed Beta before the game launched.

    Unless they added an Insider Version after I checked two days ago, you can't play that version, as the servers don't accept the Sea of Thieves Beta client anymore.

    You will have to buy the actual game, or have an active Game Pass subscription to be able to play Sea of Thieves.
