  1. Samsung KS8000 and HDR10 for games and Bluray

    Hi folks,

In my Xbox One S when I go to Settings -> Display and Sound -> Video Output -> Advanced Video Settings -> 4K TV Details, I'm seeing a message that (among other things) my
"TV setup" does not support HDR10, so games and movies won't be displayed with HDR.

I'm using a Samsung KS8000 (UN65KS8000FXZA), which certainly supports HDR (and from what I can gather, almost certainly supports the HDR10 format).

Someone on a Samsung forum suggested enabling UHD color in the TV's expert settings, which I've done, but I'm still seeing the same message in the
4k TV Details page of my Xoox One S.

I'm wondering whether there may be some limitation of the brand new Yamaha RX-V481BL home theater receiver through which I'm connecting to the TV's HDMI 1 port. I guess I need to check with the Yamaha's specs next.

Or... what else might I be missing? Any advice would be appreciated.

    :)

9th Of September 2016 Preview Update turns off HDR10 for gaming?

Yeah, I am getting the same issue. Before update I had all the marks checked green. I own the Samsung KS8000. Now the mark with HDR10 gaming is red.

Have you tried to connect directly to the TV to rule out issues with the passthrough on the stereo or double checked that your firmware is up to date? I am looking myself at upgrading my TV and stereo for 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos.

  5. Plenty of threads I've seen with people driving the Xbox One S's 4K output through a receiver is often due to the receiver being at fault, because the receiver's specifications for various HDMI features (4K, HDR, 60Hz, etc) are often minimal, if not outdated.

With the above being the case, the Xbox One S will be checking the "4K TV details" criteria against the receiver itself, not the TV.

As Sho K1lla mentioned, it is best to connect your Xbox directly to your TV. Your Samsung KS8000 should support HDR10, which is the type of HDR profile that the Xbox One S uses.

  6. Thanks Sho and Expert,

I did connect directly to the TV and everything was fine. So there was something with either the receiver or the HDMI cable I was using that was having a limiting effect. I first tried a better HDMI cable and that didn't help. So I got on a chat with
Yamaha's support team - they were very busy two days after Christmas and I had to wait half an hour - and found out that the receiver (Yamaha RX-V481) has at least two 4K modes.

Mode 2 is the default (kind of like starting an epic movie series with Episode 4). Apparently, mode 2 supports a broader range of HDMI cables, but it doesn't support HDR.

The agent explained how to switch it to Mode 1:

"There is a setting in the advanced setup menu of the receiver, 4K mode. The default is Mode 2. It should be set to Mode 1 for HDR.

To access this setting, power the receiver off. On the front panel of the receiver press and hold the STRAIGHT button, then press the POWER button on the front panel once, and then release the STRAIGHT button. Press the left PROGRAM button on the front panel
of the receiver to select 4K Mode. Toggle the STRIAGHT button to select Mode 1 and then power the receiver off."

...and that did the trick. I get all green checkmarks now on the 4K TV Details test. I hope this info will help others with current-model Yamaha home theater receivers.
