Same External Hard Drive for One and 360

I was wondering if someone could tell me if I could use the same external hard drive I'm using for my Xbox one on my Xbox 360? I don't want to plug it into my 360, format it, then plug it back into my One and have it erased all of my games and progress.
Also can you verify an option on the 360 that allows you to assign a certain amount of storage for the 360's use and not format the whole Hard Drive. I recall being able to do that with a USB. So if anyone has had experience with this I would really appreciate
it if you could help me out. Thanks

I like the external option, the 360 hard drives were too expensive compared to a same size external hard drive.

Install or no install?

As long as you don't install both discs on the same hard drive, you should be good. For example, install disc one on your main Xbox 360 hard drive. Install disc two on an external hard drive or flash drive.

Hello, sadly I don't have the answer but I would also like to know if this will work the other way around. I have a ton of saved Xbox 360 content on my Seagate external but I'm running out of room on my Xbox One HD. I would like to use the Seagate external
for saves on my one as well without losing my 360 content. Thanks.

I am having the same problem on xbox 360 i had it on my hard drive and external hard drive and it does the same thing

as per the other comments about the use of the external hard drive for the 360 I am in the update preview program which allows additional External hard drives to be used.I purchased the same Seagate 2tb external hard drive as per my xboxone but when I apply
the format on the xbox360 as per the instructions it replies with unable to format. Would like to know what external hard drives are compatible? I no the hard drive works as tried it on the xboxone after it would not format for the 360
