Sales Tax

Hello, i currently live in the state of Massachusetts with a billing address also in the state of Massachusetts. I recently purchased a copy of the Fallout 4 season pass with a price of $49.99, or at least this was what i thought. Massachusetts has a sales
tax of 6.25% bringing the price up to $53.12 but there is no sales tax on digital goods within the state of Massachusetts as digital goods are defined as intangible and therefore nontaxable, also other services i used such as iTunes and Steam both do not charge
me sales tax. I am curious as to why this tax was charged, and if it was perhaps an error.

Hi there, Spartan7P49. If you are seeing "plus tax" that just means that MSFt recognizes that your region/area has a sales tax. Even if sales tax were applied, it wouldn't matter. For me, sales tax is about 9%. But 9% of $0 is $0, right?

Good luck with this. I have been attempting to get Microsoft to fix the sales tax on my account since they all the sudden started charging me in December of 2016. I live where the sales tax on internet purchases are exempt from
sales tax and even after providing them with the tax code showing them that I live where internet sales are exempt from taxes they still refuse to stop charging me taxes. i know they passed a law a few years back about charging internet sales tax but i also
live in one of the 5 states that are exempt for this law as well. I have been trying to get refunded for all my transactions in which they charged me a sales tax for a while now and still trying. I have now involved the City tax representatives and they
are getting involved so maybe some day i will get my funds back but i am not holding my breath. So basically if you have been wrongfully charged a sales tax by Microsoft your screwed they have been working at avoiding paying taxes for years and have it down
to a science and they will tax you as they see fit and give you a million reason why they can but when you can prove them wrong they will give you the run around email this place talk to your local tax people excreta. its a game of cat and mouse that will
never end until you are so exhausted that you give up. Microsoft did not become the multi billion dollar company by refunding money they stole from people.

 

not in error intentional. they can therefore they will if you jump through the hoops and spin around on one foot while chewing bubble gum you might get your money back but they will most likely refer you to your local tax services who then will refer back
to Microsoft so good luck.

 

IT took me 18 months multiple phone calls and emails to finally convince them that it was their error in charging me a sales tax just to get them to take it seriously enough to actual investigate it. it took another month or so and they still to date do
not know why they are charging me a sales tax and can not fix it. I had to point out to them every aspect of my local sales tax code including that the seller (Microsoft) will refund immediately any and all money collected if done in error. My problem persisted
over the course of the 18 months that I keep trying to convince them it was wrong. I even contact my local city accountant, Mayor, state tax assessor, state governor, and state senator trying to get this problem resolved at the vary least to get my money
back that they unlawfully collected over the course of 18 months. I should receive a check in the mail at some point soon if not there are criminal liability clauses in the tax code that will apply since I know the city has contacted them in regards to refunding
me. I would recommend that you find a copy of your local tax code read it and submit the parts that show why they are not to be taxing you and provide it to support. I would also recommend that you look up Microsoft Financial Code of Conduct as this seems
to be where they started taking my case a little more seriously. You would think that after all my troubles and the fact that they can not seam to prevent from unlawfully taxing me that they would have offered me some kind of compensation for all my troubles
but no. after 16 years of Xbox I have to say good bye as I can not do business with a company that will continue to unlawfully tax me for purchases I make. on the bright side it will save me over $3,000 a year.

For anyone experiencing this same issue I feel your pain and good luck as it almost takes an act of God to recover the taxes they charge unlawfully.
