    Just sharing what worked for me as I was looking everywhere for an answer but never got both my xboxs to have opened NAT and finally got it to work this way. No harm intended.

    I thought you were saying that you had a DIR 655 and having trouble....

    As far as the WRT54g, it is a good router but not great for gaming these days. If you feel like tinkering much then you may be able to put an aftermarket firmware on it to get it to perform a little better, but there is only so much the aging hardware will
    be able to do. A quick search for "aftermarket firmware wrt54g" will point you in the right direction. If you move to any router that is 802.11n then you will have the performance you are looking for.

    I haven't used many routers but my trusty Linksys hasn't been causing me trouble since it was purchased *which was many years ago*. My brother has a pair of TurtleBeach headsets and the router hasn't caused him any
    issues.

    If yoi remove the vpn you will gain a significant speedboost

    Running any proxy slows you down

    Any mesh or ac routers should.have self healing which allows devices to be switched and managed on the network by the chips in the router

    I still use a D-Link connected with a bridge over my main Tp-Link router, it's a mess, but it works with surprisingly little to no lag.
