Resolution works on DVI but not on HDMI.

Hello, I tried hooking my Xbox One to a newer TV. When I connect with an HDMI cable, the resolution expands too far horizontally on 1080p or 720p, but on 640 x 480 it's too short vertically and the screen is too blurry.

Still using the HDMI, I switch the setting to DVI, and the picture and resolution becomes perfect, but I have no sound.

Why would it work with DVI settings while still using an HDMI, but not work with an HDMI? Thanks for any help.

    :)

Xbox 360 Elite HDTV Display Issue
However DVI is not compatible with Xbox since it does not support HDCP protocol.
DVI handles HDCP just fine. HDCP support is dependent on the devices, not HDMI or DVI. This is really neither here nor there as he's talking about
a specific company (DVI Gear) and not a DVI cable. The cable is HDMI.

While rare, I have come across an HDMI cable that worked on one device, but not on another. If things are marginal enough, they may not work properly. There are two inputs on the TV that support HDMI. Both should be tried. The 360 should be set to 720p as
the TV's a 1366x768 display. 720p is the closest to the native resolution of the display.

  3. I want to use a computer monitor as my screen to play Xbox 360/One

If your monitor supports HDMI then you just do it like that. However not all monitors support that or have speakers so in order to have sound you'll need a workaround.

If your monitor only supports DVI or HDMI displayport you'll need to get a cable which converts from HDMI to DVI or HDMI to displayport

DVI does not support sound there is however an HDMI to DVI+audio cable, this audio cable is just a regular 3.5mm jack which can be plugged into external speakers so you'll just have to see which works best for you.

And a little footnote, if your resolution on the monitor is smaller than the one you have set up on your Xbox now you might have to reset the resolution on your Xbox.

Resolution works on DVI but not on HDMI.

Reading you post I wonder if your TV has some sort of default overscan on information received through the HDMI lead. If you have to option available try setting the HDMI input to game mode to see if that helps.

If this does not work please read the article below as I hope it may point you in the right direction to resolve your issue.

While your answer wasn't the exact precise method of fixing it, while looking for the game mode in the picture settings, I realized my picture settings kept defaulting back to "Wide" for some reason, so I managed to fix it. Thank you, sir. Have a good day.

  6. My vizio brand new the game HDMI port is fixed to wide normal mode. So I can't change or use the other view modes using that port. When watching SD programming I can't stretch the picture but I hook the Xbox to any of the other HDMI ports I can change the
view. Since that port on my vizio is the only 60hz port and has the 120 effective hz rate ill suffer not watching SD in upscale mode. I could separate the tv from the Xbox but now I got used to switching and shaping tv while watching a YouTube or surfing the
    internet I can't go back.

Will a HDMI To DVI Adapter work?
  11. IceStorm III Win User

    No video through DVI adapter

That monitor only has DVI-D and DisplayPort inputs. DVI-D only allows for digital connections. VGA is analog. The two do not work together.

There's also no XBOX DVI cable. Microsoft officially only supports HDMI. From the

    manual for the monitor,
HDMI to DVI would work as the monitor can accept 1680x1050. It may work with 1920x1080, but that's not a listed resolution in the manual. You'd either need to buy an AV Port to HDMI adapter (somewhat rare, not usually cheap), or
a new console that has HDMI output.
