Resetting Gamertags on Inactive Accounts

Every time I try to change my gamertag to something, it says it's already taken (obviously). But when I look up the person, they have NOTHING on their account. No gold membership, no gamerscore, no friends, nada. I'm wondering if Microsoft can reset these
accounts, so that other people, who actually play, can have the gamertag of their choice. Could this sort of thing be implemented in the future?

They actually do this but its not live gamertags as much as Microsoft accounts goes inactive for x period they will purge it

 

Next-Gen Xbox to Make Old Gamertags Available?

What if you could get that old gamertag that's been inactive for years or never used? What if Microsoft allowed us to use the old gamertags or names that have never been used on Xbox with the next-generation Xbox? Some names haven't been used because they are used on other Microsoft LIVE services such as Zune.

I think it would be awesome if they had a specific time frame that inactive accounts would become available again after going silver. Say 6 months after its been silver/inactive, make it available to the public again. And you could keep track of how many times its been transferred owners like they have the numbers now for how many years you've been on Xbox LIVE.

 

They resetted a few years back but it went bad and they probably wont do it again

 

It's so dumb how people make accounts just to have a gamertag and never use it though. They need to come up with a system to fix that.

 

Gamertags are used on other services,not just xbox live so you can't know if the tag is in use or not.

As said,they reset a load of gamertags when they shut down live on the original xbox but people were snapping them up to sell them so wether they reset them again is anyones guess.

 

Whats wrong with the name you already decided on??
