    Hello, I was directed here after a live chat to ask for advice.

    I was forced to migrate my Mojang account to Microsoft, and I had to pick a Gamertag. Apparently, "" isn't allowed by the Gamertag system.

    I don't know why, and I was hoping if anyone could give me a clue as to what the issue is. What's bewildering is that I have used this name on every online service I use for the past 17 years, not limited to my email with Microsoft itself, my previous name on Mojang, and also as my username on this forum. My question to Microsoft is, what is the cause of the inconsistency here?

    My request is one of these two:

    1. Let me set my Gamertag to ""

    2. If 1 is absolutely not possible, could I have someone smarter/more knowledgable explain why it's not allowed, and/or why it is allowed everywhere else on Microsoft services.

    Try to avoid circular answers here, such as "It's not allowed because the system says so". We already know that. I'm asking why it's not, on a deeper level. If anyone knows a possible root cause, let me know! Request: Why isn't the name "Boffinbox" allowed for Xbox Live, but allowed for other... :)

    If you need evidence of name usage across platforms, I can provide that.

    My name is AJ, I'm an Independent Advisor for the Xbox Community.

    Unfortunately, there is no way to choose a Gamertag that isn't allowed by the system. There are a few different reasons why a Gamertag might not be allowed, and I'm afraid there is no way to get around this.

    Hi,

    Xbox live is a global network and sometimes the reason why a Gt isn't allowed isn't that obvious.

    Just look for the irish meaning of that word and you sure will understand why it is not allowed. ^^

    What do you mean by your "current username"?

    If the system tells you that gamertag isn't allowed, then there are specific reasons why it's not allowed. Maybe it's a slang term in a different language, or a trademarked name or some other reason why Microsoft blocked that name.

    You would have to choose a different one.
