Replacing external HDD, xbox with latest update prompts for system update on boot

Original Xbox 360 with 20GB hard drive that is no longer working. Using external usb drives and flash drives.

I couldn't update the system via Xbox Live because the I didn't have any disk space. I assume the error is due to the internal drive doesn't have enough space. I used a USB flash drive to update the system. I had a second external drive attached during
the update. Everything worked fine and the Dashboard shows version 2.0.17489.0. Xbox 360 works perfectly.

A month pass, my external hard drive fails and doesn't get recognized by Xbox 360 or Windows PC. No big deal and replaced it with a new external hard drive.

Now every time I boot up, the xbox prompts to update the system. It fails saying I don't have the 190 MB need for update. I have the new external hard drive plugged in and recognized by the xbox. It is newly formatted via xbox and the system shows plenty
of free space. The Dashboard still shows version 2.0.17489.0. Checking on MSFT site, this is the latest update. Somethings I noticed is that the storage devices no longer show Cloud storage and I'm not signed into Xbox live. Aside from that it looks normal.

I tried X LB RB X LB RB X to remove the system update, cleared the system cache, and different external hard drives. Tried to update via usb flash drive but the system update doesn't run. I'm assuming because it the Dashboard has the latest version. The
Dashboard still shows version 2.0.17489.0. I couldn't find any way to downgrade the Dashboard. Nothing seems to work.

To sum it up, users can't change external drives because there's some system data on it. That's a not good, since external drives won't last forever.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

    :)

    Xbox 360 s update loop

few days ago i tried to turn on my 360s which i have neglected for quite sometimes only to discover that my main xbox live profile has gone missing. I tried to download the profile many times but each time it will end up in an error few second after it started.

further i notice the problem got worst later. The 360s will prompt me to update to latest firmware everytime i turnon/restart even tho i already did (thru manual update by usb stick). However, even if i approve the update (thru live) request, the update
went very slowly n my xbox will restart halfway downloading the patch. After the restart, it will prompt me to update again. my xbox effectively stuck in an "update loop". Meanwhile, kinect will have a blinking yellow light and appear to be not working.

After doing some research i realise it could be the 250g hdd problem. I formatted the hdd but the problem remains. xbox in update loop.

lastly i tried to remove the hdd, again put in the usb stick with latest firmware, partition part of it to be usable by xbox, update the system again. This time the update went smoothly, the kinect is revived, and i can download my xbox live profile successfully.

i thought the problem is solved. I plug the 250g hdd back in, formatted it and removed cache, and transfer my live profile back to the hdd.

At this stage i thought i hv solved the problem. I remove the usb stick n restart the system for the last time. However, when i boot up my xbox without the usb stick, the system prompt me to update again (duh) and i cant connect to live.

but the strangest thing is that now if i boot up the xbox with the usb plugged in (and also hdd), there is no update prompt and i can login the hdd. i even installed a game on the hdd n it worked. But if i boot up with only hdd (without usb stick), update
prompt willbe up n i cant login live.

Anyone have any idea how i can run my xbox with only hdd and be able to login live?

    thanks

System Updates and External Hard Drives

    Hi Gannon,

yep, system updates are on the console, the external HDD is just for games/apps. So don't forget to leave some space on the internal HDD for updates if you dont transfer everything to the external one.

    Hope that helps!

Replacing external HDD, xbox with latest update prompts for system update on boot

I found someone else having a similar problem but luckily his usb still works. Still no resolution aside from saying the HDD is bad.

Hi, I'm terribly sorry that this has happened for you. Unfortunately the older FAT consoles are no longer supported by Xbox so we won't be able to help here too much.

The best I can offer is to suggest seeing if you can get a used hard drive from your local gaming store.

Other than that you may need to consider purchasing a new console.

    Xbox ruined my external hardrive

    Unplug the external drive.

Reset the Xbox back to factory settings.

Run through the latest Xbox update, and then plug in the external hdd.

For those having issues installing, you need to get the latest console update and then everything should be fine. Check in system settings to manually update the console. It's rolling out now. Includes external HDD support!

I have two Xbox One's (Day one editon and a One X), both an external HDD (1TB), latest update and no issues.
