Remote control over xbox when not on same network as console

remote play was designed for the household on the same network

still with the network setup properly remote play can be played over the internet

There are other ways of controlling your Xbox, especially from your own network. For example, someone could've downloaded the Xbox app onto their phone (in your house) and used their phone as the controller.

Another way would be to stream the console to the PC - you can control the Xbox that way then.

A third way is through the Xbox Companion App on the PC.

Each of these offers a way for to control your console remotely, but it requires the person to be in the same house as you, and on the same network.

I'm experiencing the same thing. This didn't break for me until I updated my Xbox S console. The media remote lights up when you touch/move it, so I know it works -- and the Xbox Controller works - but the remote won't work with the console. Again, this
happened during the most recent Xbox update.

I have similar issue.

What doesn't work:

• Remote Control from Standy On : Cannot touch Xbox button or Turn On Console to truly power on the console.
  
• Remote Play from Standby On: Cannot connect to the console, even though the router can find the console connected to network, can ping to the console through router console.
  
• Game management: cannot install or uninstall games
  

What does work:

• Change console name: using Xbox app to change console name, the updated name reflects on Xbox app Beta, Xbox Game Streaming (Test app) for PC. This means the apps still be able to connect to the console, sending signal to the console.
  
• Remote play when Powered on: remote play/console streaming feature can be used only and if only the console is turn on, with the Xbox button on console lighted on. Work on both External and internal networks => not related to NAT(Open type) or Remote settings because all testings give green status. ==> However, having the console turn on directly in-home or having someone at home to turn on the console for me is not the point of remote play. The console is supposed to be turn on in background for remote play from External network!
  

This issue should be fixed before anything else!

The Xbox One Media Remote uses a infrared (IR) transmitter, which is fairly common in television remotes and it's probably the same technology used to control your LED lights which is the problem your running into.

The Xbox One controller users a different technology which is why you don't have that problem with the controller as you do with the media remote.

IR requires a straight line to the console in order to control it, so you essentially need to move the LED lights IR module away from the console so when you attempt to use the media remote, the LED lights don't detect it. I'm not sure if this is a feasible
option but that's probably your only option.
