    Release an unused gamertag request?


    I was just chatting with Microsoft support concerning the release of a gamertag that's being used by an inactive account. They told me I would have to make a public request for this gamertag and gave me a link to XboxIdeas to do so. That site seems like
    it's more for suggested features rather than the release of gamertags, so I just wanted to know if that's truly where I make the request or not. Thanks.

    Hi,

    You can't buy unused gamertags I'm afraid. You will have to wait until Microsoft release the unused gamertag which they do occasionally. It could be years though.

    Unreleased OG Gamertags still?

    They did release unused gamertags, but if the tags are in use in other services as well, they can't release them.

    Sorry, but there is no way to request a gamertag to be freed up. The only way a tag is freed up is if the original owner changes it to something else, or if they do not sign into the account for 5 years (starting in 2016) it will be released. Keep in mind
    that the tag system is in use on other Microsoft services so even if it's not in use on an Xbox, it may be in use somewhere else.

    Ah, okay. The account seemingly hasn't been used since 2012, and the support person did mention that its linked email is no longer valid, so I was hoping that the gamertag could be released. Oh, well.
