    The Balder Shield, the Spider Shield, and the Blood Shield, the Crest Shield, and the Dragon Crest Shield are all pretty good medium shields. The greatshield of Artorias is also the best greatshield in my opinion.

    So if I'm not using my shield for bashing and just for defence, is there any gain in upgrading it? I'm looking for a shield that I can upgrade to improve its defensive properties. I can't lumber heavy shields around except the eagle shield as my strength
    is not high enough. Does upgrading a shield make it any stronger in defence?

    The Riot Shield is indeed a lot of fun, my most memorable Riot Shield Kill was in last stand with somguy clowning me on the ground and I promptly meleed him twice with my shield while I was on my back.
