    The error code that you listed suggests a region issue. Gold membership cards are region locked and can only be used for gamertags that are set for the same region. Please ensure that your gamertag's region (country) is the same as the card you purchased.

    Here's my "error code" for the same thing: 6f281d54-e18d-40d6-93a7-af7d6e656d9a

    Region is USA. Could MS please fix this? My Live membership is supposed to renew on 1/1/15, but all I've gotten from the account functions is "uh oh, that wasn't supposed to happen" when I try to put the auto renewal on.

    Hi, Well you must be a Gold Member and that would require you to add that feature to your xbox live account after you purchase a 3, 6 or 12 month membership. And redeem the code to be a gold member.

    Private chat is only a feature of the Xbox LIVE Gold membership. I'm not sure what sort of redemption code you redeemed on your account but if it was a 2 Day or 14 Day Trial gold membership those do not change your account to a gold membership, they only allow
    you to play online multiplayer games in public playlists and talk in party chats.
