Recurring xbox live $1/mo for a year?

My friend says I am being a sucker paying $40 - $70 a year for xbox live because he just uses some special link he clicks on that gets him xbox live for $1 per month each time. I want to debunk if this is fraud or legitimate but I doubt it's the latter.

I would rationally assume that the xbox live $1/mo deal is a promotion that only lasts the first month. If you could just somehow reset your promotion like my friend apparently does then everyone would have xbox live for $12 per year, which seems fraudulent
to me. I see this as exploitation of the system.

If any Microsoft community members would like to help me clarify this, I would be thankful. I'm seeking official support on this.

Xbox live gold Prepaid code

Using prepaid codes won't charge you for Gold like a recurring subscription. It would simply give you 1 Month of Xbox Live.

 

Change gamertag on Xbox Live 12 mo. Family Membership

My family has the Xbox Live 12 mo. Family Membership with 4 gametags synced on it.

My question is, can that be changed? We would like to remove 1 gamertag for a new gamertag.

The $1 deal is only good for the first month, but if it appears again on the dashboard then you could totally take part in it again. There's no way to just reset it though. The only other way he could be getting it for $1 is by purchasing it as a code through
some other website if there is one.

 

So it's not exploiting the system if you exploit that deal over and over by waiting for it each time? I find that fishy.
