Reclaiming Old Gamertag

When I was a kid, my friends and I made some accounts to get free xbox live over the weekend. I realize this is wrong now, but as a kid with no money I just wanted to be able to play Halo with my friends and didn't really think it through.

My issue is that one of the accounts made has the Gamertag that I use as a username for everything. But I can't get the account deleted because I don't have access to the burner email used to create the account. And despite the account being inactive for over a decade, it hasn't been deleted yet.

What sort of action can I take to get help with this?

Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is to sign in to your old account that has the gamertag you want to use and change the gamertag. It will then become available for you to use on your new account.

Xbox profiles are never completely deleted. So even if your Microsoft account got deleted, the gamertag will still be on the Xbox live server/database. I'm sorry about that.

Do you have access to the Microsoft account associated with this old Xbox profile?

Unfortunately there is no way to reclaim these gamertags unless you have access to the emails or security information (if any at all) associated with them. There is kind of an issue in itself - if you made alternate accounts to get free services, that could be seen as an exploit as well, pushing the issue further away from solvability.

Can you get these accounts/gamertags back?

Short answer, no. IF you do remember any of the emails, though, you may be able to access it through the 'Forgot My Password' option.

To recover your old gamertag, you can follow these steps:

Turn on your Xbox console and make sure it is connected to the Internet.
In the panel, select the “Xbox Live” option, then navigate to the “Recover Gamertag From Xbox Live” option.
Select "Gamertag."
Enter the gamertag you want to recover.
Click “Done” and then “Next.”
If when you purchased your Xbox Series S console you had entered the same Microsoft account that you had on your previous console, it would not have asked you to create a new gamertag since for existing Xbox accounts the same gamertag is simply used if you log in. You should only create a new gamertag if the Microsoft account you are using is new or does not have an Xbox profile linked

I'm trying to re-associate my old Microsoft account (with a Google address) with my current gamertag. I did learn that the old account was indeed associated with a free Silver gamertag for reasons I cannot remember. In order to make the switch to the old
account, I renamed the old account with a new email address, in hopes that I could somehow reclaim the old address. However when I tried to rename, I received the error: 'email isn't available'. What happened to it? Why can't I reclaim it???
