Receiving purchase and activity notifications that aren't mine

Hello,

I may not be in the right spot to ask this question so if that's the case, my apologies.

An interesting predicament - lately I've been receiving emails to my alternate account (the one I use for password recovery for my Xbox account) regarding suspicious activity based on location and purchases being made. However, when I go and check on my
account, the incidents are not logged there. I recently received an email advising of my purchase of Battlefield V, which I did not purchase, so I went to see when it was charged to my account, and it hasn't been. The last charge on my account is showing as
March 16th, which is accurate. There is no indication on either my Xbox account or on my Mastercard/PayPal that this transaction ever occurred.

Today, I got a notification of unusual sign in activity. So I went to check that, and that too is not showing up. Only the sign ins I've initiated have in fact been recorded. This has actually happened a couple of different times, and each time it did not show
anything unusual on my actual account.

As a precaution I changed my password and I enabled TFA, so I don't really see how this could be happening except to say that someone else is using my email address as either their primary or backup address as well. I don't know how that could be the case as
I was under the impression that they can't be used on multiple accounts, but I can't say that as fact.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this, and what I might be able to do to stop it?

Thanks Edgarour, I have enabled two factor authentication on the account and changed the password. There hasn't been any actual unauthorized access to the account, so I suspect that someone is just using my email address in their profile in the same way
I do - to receive communications from Microsoft. I'd be willing to bet that person is wondering why they haven't received any receipts or confirmations for purchases, but at the end of the day my account is secure. I can just change the email address I use
for those purposes and that will pretty much be the end of it.

It is strange but I would recommend that you change your email account and transfer it to a new one or use a passkey or verification that reaches your cell phone either by text message or call that confirmation to access your account at any time

Thanks for reaching out to the forums. We see you have a question on notifications. Is it possible the same email is on a friend or relative account also as a secondary. For example if you have a child is it possible to be on their account? This will send
notifications to that email also even though it isn't your account.

Hi Brad,

I don't think the person would be a relative, but my IRL name is not terribly uncommon, so I wouldn't think it impossible for it to have been used in error by someone else with the same name but not using the correct email address (like hotmail.com versus
hotmail.co.uk, for example). I just wasn't sure that this was possible, but I guess the only requirement for a unique email would be for the account itself, not necessarily the backup. I have confirmed that there has been no unauthorized access to my account
and as I mentioned I've enabled TFA and changed my password, so I suspect that this is just something that I can resolve by using a different backup email address.

Yes I get mine through the Xbox app. You can select, in the Settings in the app, what to receive notifications for. So just make sure you go into the notification settings and set it to where you receive a notification on your phone for new messages. You
can set it for other things as well.
