    Receipts sent to me in error


    I keep getting receipsts for someone else sent to me at my Apple address.

    Firstly, why? Doesn’t Microsoft confirm email addresses before sending receipts?

    Secondly, why would Microsoft not send all receipts to the Microsoft address needed to use its services in the first place?

    Thirdly, why is it so hard to explain this to a human? The chat system doesn’t cover this problem. Even this forum doesn’t have a heading for the problem.

    I have neither an Xbox nor an Xbox account (nor children). My understanding is that this precludes me from participating in the forums.

    I believe this is a general Microsoft security problem.

    In any event, as I said, I’m hoping to attract the interest of a Microsoft staffer.

    This has been happening to me about monthly for about six months, but recently twice in two days. I’ve even used snail-mail to write to the Microsoft President about it. Whilst I didn’t expect a response from the great man himself, I was hoping that an assistant
    might take notice. There was no response.

    Frankly I don’t think Microsoft cares.

    All Apple emails are unique without country identifiers, taking the form *** Die E-Mail-Adresse wurde aus Datenschutzgründen entfernt. ***. I do have an account with Microsoft (Office 365) so wouldn't want to block them. I can't think of anything I've joined online recently that hasn't sent me an email to confirm
    my address: surprised Microsoft hasn't heard of this system, or sees no need to implement it...

    Of course, the other thing is there's someone out there wondering what happened to his receipt.

    Thank you for your thoughts, but my hope was that a Microsoft representative might see this and think about fixing it.

    And, as for posting it in the wrong forum, it really doesn't fit anything. I liked the look of security: perhaps not mine, but the person I've been sent partial credit card information on might consider it a security issue. Actually it was an Xbox game receipt.
    If you look through, as I did, really no ideal subject description from the drop-downs offered.

    There is no link to click on. I have on a few occasions managed to navigate through the labyrinthine Microsoft chat system to speak to a human who confirmed that these were real invoices for real purchases, but that those making them had given my email
    in error. Also, I have checked where they came from and it is a genuine Microsoft address.

    Because what you're receiving aren't from Microsoft and in fact aren't real at all, because they're a well known scam that almost everyone knows about by now, but a few people still apparently get fooled by.

    There are literally millions of variations of these abusing the company names of many different firms, including Microsoft and even Apple, which you'd think the scammers would have instead used in the case of delivery to an Apple address, since it would
    more likely have fooled you.

    There's also other reasons for sending these that just Phishing as the FTC mentions, with tricking the target into allowing access to their device or extorting them for money directly being the most common.

    So obviously someone has provided the wrong address to Microsoft.

    Microsoft has always verified anything that requires online access, so these must be standalone items that don't require receiving the receipt to function or the person would have noticed long ago they weren't receiving their associated product.

    However, the reason you're having problems finding aid here is you're in entirely the wrong place, since Xbox has its own support and forums structure, while these forums are specifically for the Windows related products including Office and Windows security
    issues.

    That separate support structure may be why this issue can occur, since though they can potentially both use a Microsoft account, that may not necessarily be directly linked to the one used for Windows.

    Again, since I'm not personally using an Xbox or any other gaming products, I'm less aware of how these truly work. But it doesn't completely surprise me that these sorts of strange issues might occur on occasion, since often either children or others with
    less knowledge of properly setting up accounts might be involved.

    It also just occurred to me that this might be some sort of identity theft, since Xbox isn't supported everywhere in the world and using a stolen email address from a country where these are supported might be a way of bypassing this. Again, this is only
    a guess, but it could help explain why someone might not care they're unable to receive receipts or certain other communications.

    < EDIT > Based on that last thought I did another search and found this page and specific topic, so you might want to try working with Xbox enforcement to see whether this is a case of identity theft. Even if it's not, they might be in a position to resolve
    the situation better than someone on the Windows side which apparently isn't where the problem lies.
