Really? Is that how Microsoft tricks customers?

I just noticed that Microsoft has a quite unpleasant trick when you don't monitor your Live membership closely. When you log in after your membership expired and you haven't renewed yet you are STILL able to download the respective Gold Game for X360. In
the first dialogue it shows "Free" and if you are forwarded to the second page (where you have to confirm the payment) it changes to the actual price without Gold. Be careful not to continue here. I did because I was still thinking my Live would run till the
end of the month. Without warning, I sent 15 Euro with PayPal - for an old X360 game! I honestly cannot believe that Microsoft says they are not taking this back even IF it is in this month's free Games with Gold. What kind of service is this supposed to be?
And is there anything I can do now? Why would I renew my Live membership again now if I already (grossly over)paid for a game that is in this month's offers?

Do you guys feel that? Microsoft has learned how to Force Choke like Darth Vadar. They find our lack of faith disturbing and now they are playing mind tricks and force choking us into submission. May the Xbone be with you.

It will show you what it's going to charge before you accept. If it's a game with gold, it will say that it's free (with gold).

When you go to buy it, you'll see the window with the payment method and the amount it will charge. Then you click Get or Buy and process the charge. No tricks involved.

Seems like you were trying to see of you could get a game for free without your gold subscription. You can contact Xbox Support and see if they will help you with your "accidental purchase"
