Because, at least here in the US, the ISPs essentially have a monopoly on the market and get away with it and its either you pay or have no internet. I have no Data Caps thankfully but my friend who lives only twenty mins away does. They don't want to spend
the time or resources to improve their infrastructure. Now if we had actual competition it wouldnt be so bad but they have halted Google from expansion with some crap like "unfair competition" or whatever.

 

In NZ, Vodafone for ultra fast cable internet, offers two plans I think, an 80GB plan, and an unlimited plan. There's no other monthly usage options to choose from. When the unlimited plan is only $10 more expensive than the 80GB, it's a no brainer which
plan everyone is going to go for. Especially when Netflix and online gaming and streaming is popular in NZ.

sky fibre in the UK, £15 per month unlimted data and no fair usage policy, mobile is with Three and i pay £43 per month for unlimited texts, minutes and unlimited 4G.

 

I'm in the virtually the exact same boat as D33dles. I'm with AT&T as well and am supposed to get 6mbps down and 1mbps up for the $40 my family pays every month. It even comes with a 400GB data cap that's hidden in the fine print (which my brother found).
While that may seem like enough, it's not for my family. The actual speeds tend to be more like 5mbps down and 0.4mbps up - which is only enough for us to do 1 thing at a time (play games OR watch streaming video NOT both and the latter is almost never in
full HD). Even with the 400GB cap, we still routinely go over it each month and end up paying anywhere between $60-100, not $40, as a result. I called customer support just yesterday morning to find a way to get better broadband in my area, since what I've
just mentioned is the best they offer there, and guess what happened - I was talking to a machine, that transferred me to another machine, which transferred me to another machine, which then told me that there was nobody available at the time to take my call
because the support center was currently closed (despite the fact that the hours listed on the support website said that they were available during that time). Believe it or not, I'm NOT kidding - it actually happened!

Today, I'm going to find the nearest AT&T center and get someone, make my case, and get someone out to improve the lines because the demand is there and I'm willing to pay for it - they just don't seem to realize it, because of their monopolistic tendencies,
as mentioned before by others. Failing that, I intend to write a strongly worded letter to their president because the whole thing has become absolutely and laughably bad.

But seriously, data caps are going to be a huge obstacle in the future should any console want to go full digital downloads. Thankfully I have no data cap but I know plenty of people who do who are stuck waiting for new games or other downloads for the new
month to roll in. I always ask why stay with a company if they cap your data like that? Because there's just no other options in that area. Pretty sad.

That's in Illinois and the biggest town over 5,000 people is 35 miles away. Seems strange that others in bigger cities don't already have that option in some areas.
