    Random disconnects and buffering on Xbox One and Xbox One X


    I am experiencing random disconnects or high latency on both of my Xbox consoles and would like some assistance in diagnosing the issue.

    The main symptoms:

    1) Streaming - Will randomly have long buffering periods

    2) Gaming - Will lag and buffer or say that it has lost connection

    3) Will lose it's network connection

    ***a) I can go into wireless settings and immediately re-connect to the same network (the network is NOT down)

    Here's what I've tried so far:

    1) Went through all of the "My Xbox disconnects randomly" steps on the Microsoft site that I could find

    ***a) No change

    2) Checked my firewall and modem configurations (TP-Link Archer C5400)

    ***a) No blocked ports, running full open

    ***b) Tried making the Xbox a priority device - no change

    3) Verified that no other devices were losing connection at the same time as the Xbox issues

    4) Verified my internet connection speed as greater than 75Mbps up and 11Mbps down

    ***a) Via ISP speed test, Xbox speed test, and PC speed test

    5) Verified no drops in internet connectivity or high dB connections between the outside line and the modem/console

    ***a) ISP (Spectrum) monitored for 2 hours during which there were no drops in bandwidth but both Xboxs suffered the issues

    6) Checked wired and wireless with no discernable difference

    7) Did a direct wire to the modem (no router) and still had the same issues

    8) Performed a hard reset and a factory reset

    ***a) No change

    9) Tried Google DNS instead of ISP DNS

    10) Checked Ping latency

    ***a)12ms to xbox live servers

    Of note is that I have no issues with streaming or any networking with my PS4, PS3, PC, Roku, Kindle, Phones, or any other devices. This is inherent to just the Xbox consoles and it both the Xbox One and Xbox One X. This leads me directly to an issue with
    either the Xbox firmware or the Live servers. I would like assistance in testing these connections to see what it is and what can be done about it. Thank you.

    Brad, thanks for the response. Unfortunately this does not help as I have already verified that it is not a network issue. To clarify:

    1) The network has been monitored at the modem for several hours. During this time there was no drop in packet count, but the Xbox had lagging and disconnect issues.

    2) In addition to the lag issues the Xbox will disconnect from the wireless network for no apparent reason. Both the One and OneX do this. The network can be immediately connected again manually (have to go through the settings and re-type in the password).
    A bad ISP connection can not disconnect a device from the router.

    3) ONLY my Xboxes encounter these issues. An ISP issue would affect all devices.

    It is not the ISP.

    It is not the router.

    I find it very difficult to believe that Microsoft does not have a diagnostic monitoring tool that could be used to easily identify if the issue is from the Xboxs themselves.

    Random disconnects and buffering on Xbox One and Xbox One X

    It could be caused by passive interference. If you have walls, pipes, electrical cables, radiators or other electrical equipment, between your Xbox and router, you may well get drop outs. You can also try changing the broadcast signal to a different frequency,
    within the router/gateway as a neighbour may be on the same frequency.

    Hi Nick,

    Thanks for the additional information on the connection. Try clearing the alt mac address on both consoles. Go to settings>network>network settings>adv. settings>alt mac address>clear and restart. This is strange you had same experience with wired connection.

    Thanks for coming to the forums with your issue. This sounds a lot a network issue. Reason I state this is look at all the symptoms, long buffering lag disconnects. You may want to contact your ISP to see if they can help determine what the issue is. Personally
    had a similar issue was a post 12 blocks from my house that was causing the issue. Also, may think on upgrading your router to be able to handle all your devices.
