Thank you SirLagsAlot for sharing this information with us.

Even if you only got disconnected once, in a span of 6.5 hours, we still doesn't know if this was caused by your modem, or the Linksys router (WRT54G).

Have you had the chance to try the steps I provided as per my previous - previous post? Random "Disconnected from Xbox Live" events while playing CoD Black Ops 2 and CoD ... :)

  3. Hey, guys! To echo what Mister Beep said, I'm very sorry to see about the disconnect issues! If you could, I'm looking to find out which type of Xbox 360 you've got. You should have either the original 360, the 360 S, or the 360 E. If you aren't sure which
one you have, you can determine this by the kind of power button you have:

    • Xbox 360 Original: White or Black power button (depending on which color console you have).
    • Xbox 360 S: Silver/chrome power button that is touch sensitive, larger circle.
    • Xbox 360 E: Silver/chrome power button that needs to be pushed in like the Original console, smaller circle.
This will help us out a lot if you could provide this! If you have any questions, feel free to post back. Random "Disconnected from Xbox Live" events while playing CoD Black Ops 2 and CoD ... :D

Hi Mister Beep! Thanks for your help with my issue.

Hi taidara! Thanks for your help, too, and for reminding me about the other items in your suggestion. Here's the scoop on these items:

    • For the Linksys wifi router, it turns out that I'm using non-Linksys firmware for my WRT54G, called DD-WRT. I have found it to be a quantum improvement in terms of performance, reliability, features, etc. over the built-in Linksys firmware that came with
the WRT54G. The DD-WRT firmware has been running like a champ for several years now; in fact I think I've had it running on the WRT54G even longer than I've had the Xbox. Anyways, getting back on topic...after checking the firmware revision, it does look
like there's a slightly newer version available, so I'll put that on my list of things to try.
    • The DD-WRT firmware running on the WRT54G does have a firewall sub-feature it calls "Block Anonymous WAN Requests (ping)" which sounds like a match for the Linksys "Block/Filter Anonymous Internet Requests" that you mentioned. I will make sure this is
turned off (it is presently checked, so turned on). Though, won't this increase my network's vulnerability to things like "ping attacks"?
Hi Misses Quinzel! Welcome to our little thread Random "Disconnected from Xbox Live" events while playing CoD Black Ops 2 and CoD ... :) . After looking just now, I have the Xbox 360 S (per a label on the back of the console, as well as the distinctive touch-sensitive chrome power button that you mentioned).

I'll provide updates on xbox live disconnect characteristics after trying the modified firewall setting on the WRT54G, above.

Also, if anyone needs further info from me, just let me know--I'm happy to assist!

    Thanks everyone!!

If you refer to "ping attacks" as an attack, carried out from a distributed network of machines, to overwhelm your network, and to prevent legitimate traffic to pass through, then not even your routers firmware-based firewall will have any affect. On the
other hand, if an attack is carried out from a single origin (DoS), then DoS flood protection feature can sometimes help. However, by having Block Anonymous WAN Requests turned on can cause more harm then good, most due to the fact that ping, or Internet Control
Message Protocol (ICMP) has an important role for IP to work correctly and properly over an interconnecting network.

Your router, or NAT, is actually a very effective hardware-based firewall, which prevent unsolicated traffic to pass through onto the LAN side of your router, and it's often better then the software-based firewall installed on your router.

    Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give an update for this weekend.

I first provisioned my Linksys WRT54G wifi firewall to disable the "Block Anonymous WAN Requests (ping)" feature, to see if it had any effect on the occasional xbox live disconnect issue. After disabling this feature, I had to reboot the Linksys wifi to
reestablish the network (the wifi router went into a limbo state, it seems).

After the wifi router came back up, I signed in to xbox live without any issues. In total, I wound up playing about 8 hours of CoD Black Ops 2 over a 3 day period without any drops or xbox live disconnects on my end! So this is encouraging. Though I did
happen to notice a significant number of "lost connection to host" messages during live games. At its worst point, I believe 5 or 6 consecutive games were terminated mid-session due to host issues. An occasional host drop isn't too unusual, but 5 or 6 in
    a row is definitely curious.

At any rate, with the combination of configuring my Technicolor TC8305C to place it in bridge mode, and configuring my wifi router (separate box for me) to not block anonymous WAN requests, it appears that I'm back to a stable xbox live connection.

If for some reason I start seeing issues crop back up, I'll share them with the forum.

    Thanks again for your help!!

I am running into these same problems with frequency while trying to connect to other online players across multiple games. I only have the modem and was wodering if there was a work around this that is not putting it im bridge mode. I will try the hard
rest and see what happens. This thread has already been a god send in helping me figure out what has been wrong with my connection.

    Hi taidara!

Yes...had to think for a while about a proper gamertag, and SirLagsAlot basically summed things up for me nicely! :)

I had the opportunity to chat last night with an official Comcast employee on Comcast's user forum (very polite and professional person by the way, much like you and Mister Beep), and his comments reflected our conclusion on this thread, above, in that for
customers like myself who have an intermediate, stand-alone router situated between the Technicolor TC8305C and networked devices like the Xbox 360, it is advisable to place the TC8305C in "bridge mode", just like you concluded above.

Additionally, at least for the TC8305C, placing it in bridge mode also automatically disables its:

    • built-in Wifi (which in my case, I didn't want or need)
    • UPnP function
    • Zero Configuration function
    • (et al)
So bridge mode effectively turns the TC8305C into an "unintelligent plug", which (bless its heart) is probably doing it a favor! :)

Just to keep a complete set of notes on this issue, I verified that I'm using the latest field-tested/approved TC8305C firmware, revision 01.E6.01.22.12 . Prior to retrieving this revision code, I had manually forced a restore-factory-defaults hard reset
by depressing the recessed reset button on the back of the TC8305C for about 30 seconds, and then releasing. (After performing a hard reset, it took the TC8305C quite some time to get its affairs in order, and attach itself successfully to the Comcast network.)
I believe an after-effect of doing a hard reset is that the TC8305C automatically downloads the latest firmware for itself from a firmware "server", for lack of a better phrase. So, I'm not sure if I was running this latest 01.E6.01.22.12 revision over the
past few weeks, as I've been experiencing xbox live disconnects, or not.

I had a chance to try out the TC8305C in bridge mode last night while playing CoD MW3 (a game I have not yet tried since the xbox live disconnects started happening, so a new data point), and played for about 1 hour with no disconnects to report.

I then played CoD Black Ops 2 (a game for which I have seen frequent disconnects) for an additional hour, also with no disconnects to report. So, a solid 2 hours of online multiplayer gaming with no disconnects, which seems like a good sign.

I plan on doing some more "testing" (gaming) this weekend, and will see if any disconnects occur. I'll update this thread with the results.

Thanks again guys for your help!!

    Thanks Mister Beep.

I did check the TC8305C firewall settings a few days ago, and it was set to "Low", but wasn't turned completely off. I will try turning the firewall completely off, as a next experiment.

Here is a note I placed on a companion thread to this one, related to the TC8305C, where "taidara" is the support person (just to keep all of the discussion for our thread up to date, and self-contained):

    Thanks for helping, taidara.

A quick question. I have a Linksys router sitting between the Technicolor TC8305C and my Xbox 360 (I've had this configuration for a few years, with no issues until recently). In regards to the subset of steps from the provided
URL above (listed below), will I need to keep UPnP and Zero Configuration enabled on the TC8305C? I do have UPnP enabled on the Linksys router, not sure about Zero Configuration on the Linksys (or its equivalent, if there is one for Linksys...)

    • Access your gateway's web-utility interface.
    • From the menu, select Advanced.
    • From the submenu, select Device Discovery.
    • Make sure UPnP and Zero Configuration is ticked enable.
    • Click Save/Apply.
    • From the menu, select Gateway.
    • From the submenu, select Firewall.
    • Select Custom, and disable the firewall completely.
    • Click Save/Apply.
    • Reboot your TC8305C, and wait for it to connect properly.
(I will copy-paste this message on the separate thread I have going with Mister Beep, just to keep him in the loop.)

    Thanks!!

    Thanks!!
