Fortnite is a free-to-play game which means that it does not require an Xbox Live Gold.

Do you have an active Xbox Live Gold on your account?

if they can play online fortnite on this same machine and account, but not rainbow, does that help clarify anything? they are able to each play on separate machines for fortnite with each other online. it wasn't until they tried to redownload the rainbow that this issue happened. (we had the game on an external hard drive that went bad so we had to get a new one and redownload)

It means that they do not have an active Xbox Live Gold which is required to play an online multiplayer game.

Do you have an active Xbox Live Gold on your account? If yes, you can play the game without any issue and then, you can simply set your account as Home Xbox on the console that they're using in that way all of your subscriptions, games, DLCs will be shared on the specific console.

1. Sign in to your account on the Xbox Console that they're using.

2. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.

3. Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Personalization, and then select My home Xbox.

4. Select Make this my home Xbox
