Racing wheels and limited full button support on Xbox

    Hello all,

I recently purchased a Logitech wheel (G920) to play the Codemasters F1 titles on my Xbox One X.

To my surprise, I found that some of the buttons on the wheel did not work in the game, despite the wheel being “Xbox compatible”.

After a bit of research, I am hearing there is, in general, a lack of full button/switch/dial (hereon “button/buttons”) support for many wheels on Xbox - with the Logitech G920 being one of these; the wheel is supported in the main, but not all buttons on the
wheel are for all game titles (in my case RSB/LSB).

There are many other users who are experiencing the same button input limitations with wheels from all kinds of manufacturers, and this is causing frustration.

As sim racing gameplay (especially F1 titles) become more complicated to mirror reality, button availability becomes more essential, as there are many mid-race settings an enthusiast will want to adjust.

My question is simple; is the issue of wheel buttons not being fully supported on Xbox games a Xbox one, an issue with the game producer, an issue with the wheel manuafcturer, or a combination of all three?

Where the issue is with Xbox, what is the problem exactly? For the same game titles on PC, users report full button support, and PS users seem to have access to more buttons (if not all, when compared on Xbox), so there must be a way to make this happen
on Xbox as it’s a computer that can be programmed. I get that game producers must program controls that map to console stock controller inputs, but for controllers on the market that offer more inputs than the stock controller, what is the problem? If it’s
on the Xbox OS side, can’t Xbox ask the wheel makers to create apps/ software which act like PC drivers for their controllers in order to enable full button functionality? I’m sure they would devlop these if it meant their products would offer better gaming
experiences on Xbox - in the same way they already do the dev on this for PC.

If it’s a game developer or wheel manufacturer issue, I’ll happily pick this up with them.

What am I missing here? Keen to understand what is going on! I absolutely love my Xbox but as I intend to play more sim-racing games in the future, I may have to part ways if this will be an ongoing issue on this issue Racing wheels and limited full button support on Xbox :(

Any help or knowledge on the matter is appreciated.

    Monzie

    :)

Question on racing wheels and limited button support on Xbox

Nearly everyone in these forums are just fellow gamers. I have read your post in the past but have no knowledge of steering wheel button mapping so I did not answer. Perhaps there are no gamers here that have an answer to your question. You did your own
research and found some sort of answer. Sorry that no one here had an answer for you. We are just gamers like you.

Question on racing wheels and limited button support on Xbox

The fact there has been zero response to this is damning - do Microsoft moderators/ product ambassadors/ product experts even read these threads?

I am happy to be corrected on what I am about to say, but since I have received no response, I did a bit more digging.

My further research into this indicates the issue of additional button support rests with Microsoft Xinput, as game developers are hampered by this and cannot code for additional buttons on wheels that are not natively supported by Xbox controller input
    (Xinput).

This issue doesnt seem to be being adressed anytime soon.

Limitations abound on the platform; voice commands on games can only be achieved using Kinect, not via a headset with microphone - and the Kinect device is now discontinued!

Both additional button support and voice commands are supported on PlayStation - for gamers it is simply light-years ahead, and their “for the players” tag line has never been more apt, especially for sim racers.

I will be moving off Xbox to PlayStation or PC at the first opportunity, and advising everyone I know to do the same.

It’s good to know no-one seems to care given the lack of response - and is the final nail in the Xbox coffin for me.

    Over and out.

What is the point in buying a Wheel for racing games

Like I said before I enjoy using my wheel but it was more of a rant that I wanted to upgrade my wheel to one with more buttons to make it a little easier and a better experience but cannot because xbox limit the amount of buttons you can map to them.

    https://support.thrustmaster.com/en/product/ferrarif1addon-en/

If you look at the button mapping for xbox on that wheel the amount of duel mapping is laughable, it should a simple solution to allow all the buttons to be mapped for full use not having 4 buttons mapped to A because the poor OS doesn't allow anything else

    Criterion ruined this game

Something I forgot to add is that it won't recognize my Fanatec CSR wheel. It sees it as a MS racing Wheel and I am unable to properly adjust button assignments. There is also no support for Force Feedback adjustment or Advance wheel settings like steering
    sensitivity or deadzone settings

    The Wireless Speed Wheel works!!!

Speed wheel works better for driving than the controller but can't figure out why no bumper buttons or a way to map bumper buttons with other button combos. Some driving games like Need for Speed: Shift say they support wheel but then require the bumper
buttons to navigate through the race selections properly. Microsfoft at it again, not seeing the big picture.
