I'm still getting use to the game and as you've posted about this, I thought I'd ask; What exactly are the motifs used for?? :-S

They are used to learn new crafting styles. This exact one as stated by name allows you to craft daggers in the dwemer style

Oh right! So I'm a Khajiit, do I already know the Khajiit crafting style or do I have to get the motif first?

Also, Boylen said he 'found' his, so that is possible? I thought you had to buy them in the crown store!

You automatically know the racial style for the race of your character so you don't need to get a motif to craft in that style.

No need to buy them from the crown store if you are patient. You can find motifs inside furniture like wardrobes, dressers, trunks etc. You can even find them inside some containers in delves, dungeons and coldharbour where you wouldn't worry about having
to steal them.

As Grunnim said you can find them out in the world just by searching drawers, pots, urns, chests, etc or buy them from the crown store. As for your other question which they answered, yes you will already know the khajit crafting style since your race is
khajit.
