  1. Questions about the Code of Conduct, unauthorized hardware, etc.

I have been attempting to do some research into 3rd party controllers (specifically, gyro controllers that convert to mouse inputs for compatibility with Xbox consoles), but I am getting mixed answers regarding 3rd party hardware.

What specifically constitutes unauthorized hardware? I am getting mixed answers as most of the previous discussions I could find are about what individual game publishers consider unauthorized and not Microsoft themselves. I assume hardware that allows people to use macros and similar software without detection would be on such a list, but what about adapters to use keyboard/mouse or other control options not natively supported by a game?

I do know that publishers reserve the right to ban players from their product for sidestepping such incompatibilities, but is this in violation of the Code of Conduct and thus potentially something that could ban a user from using their Xbox?

    :)

Questions about the Code of Conduct, unauthorized hardware, etc.

If the controller or any accessory goes beyond basic features and is unauthorized (the “made for Xbox” logo, works out of the box) it can lead you to trouble

Using unauthorized accessories to change game pad input is also not allowed. Adaptive Controller allowed, pretty much anything else, not allowed

Play it with the input devices listed on the box and you have nothing to worry about.

Hello, AbsoluteUnit31. Thanks for reaching out. I'm Lucas, an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user just like you. I'll be glad to help you out.

Unauthorized hardware can be understood as hardware modifications that will give you a competitive advantage against other players.

I'm not really sure about it, but since Xbox does not have a native gyroscope aiming feature on their controllers, I think using third party controllers for this can be understood as cheating/exploiting since it will give you an advantage against other Xbox players. I would not use it just to be sure.

You can read the Xbox Community Standards at:

Feel free to ask back any questions and stay safe.

It wouldn’t necessarily surprise me if Microsoft’s official stance is this, but I still figured it would be best to ask regardless for clarification since it also encompasses challenges revolving around using suboptimal controllers (such as playing a shooter with a steering wheel controller).

The only reasons I even began trying to research the topic is because I play games that are multi platform and support direct mouse and keyboard play (including ones with cross play against mouse and keyboard players), but I’m not a big fan of keyboard controls.

I know for sure that plenty of the more competitive aligned games and activities (including tournaments) would consider it an unfair advantage and thus will ban players found using it, but in my case I do not play those games nor participate in such activities.

I was hoping to find Microsoft’s official stance on third party control hardware to bypass control incompatibility, be it to run M&K or gyro controllers or for setting up challenges like trying to play a shooter with a steering wheel.

We could try to wait to see if a Xbox employee or Microsoft agent can chime in here to give an insight. But in my understanding it would be considered as cheating/exploiting.
