Question regarding my Xbox one Profiles

I have some queries regarding my Xbox one profiles. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll explain the situation below and then lay out my questions at the end.

I appreciate that my question is long winded but i couldn't find anything online specifically relating to my problem and wanted to make sure there is no ambiguity.

My son has had an Xbox one for about 4 years now.

When we first got it I created an adult profile for me and a childs profile for my son.

Thinking back, i recall that it required me to have a microsoft email address i.e. outlook.com / hotmail.com etc. As i never had a Microsoft address, i think i was prompted to create one so i created an outlook.com address for me and one for my son.

So we had one profile each and both were linked to the newly created Outlook.com addresses and all was well. He played away happily enough.

More recently we have been playing his Xbox and i have noticed that i now have a second profile but this one is linked to my main email address (not microsoft) and got me wondering how this happened. I maybe inadverantly did this in the past or could this
have possibly happened automatically?

Reason i am thinking this is my main email address (non Microsoft) is regestered to my Microsoft family account (i know it would have been eaisier to just have had a microsoft email address in the first place) could that have somehow have made the connection
between my microsoft family account and the Xbox one profile and created a new profile linked to my non microsoft address?

Additionally, out of interest i tried logging into xbox online (on my laptop) using my sons non microsoft email address (icloud.com address) and the password that i have been using for him on Xbox, keep in mind that i have never used this email address on
xbox before but it is linked to our microsoft family account and low and behold, it loaded up an Xbox one profile, linked to his email address. It's a profile that we've never seen before, has a generic pre determined name and picture but starangley doesn't
appear as selectable when on the xbox.

It's basically got me confused as to what is going on with our profiles and the OCD side of me would really like for us to just have one each.

To summarise my queries:-

1. Was it necessary for me to create outlook address for me and my son in order to create our xbox one profiles?

2. If we both now have an Xbox one profile linked to our main (non Microsoft) email addresses then why was it necessary to create the Outlook addresses in the first place?

3. Is it possible that the profiles were created automatically or inadvertantly due to being somehow linked to our family microsoft account?

4. Can i update our original Xbox one profiles to be linked to our main (non Microsoft) email addresses instead of the outlook addresses i created and then delete the two new profiles (that were possibly created automatically) leaving just our 1 main profile
each, linked to our main email addresses?
