Question about volume control

Newbie question about volume control on the media remote - is this only for controlling the volume on a 'recognized' TV or receiver via IR blasting or can this control the actual volume output via HDMI or Optical out from the device?

My question would be ,what all will it control by voice...Will it control an AVR 's inputs and volume ?

 

It deoends on your devices comparability but mine sends the volume signals to my receiver via the HDMI cable. On a side note, I do not believe that control signals can be sent over optical cables.

Just wanted to double check, if you go to your settings and remove the 'recognized receiver', does the volume control still work? Sorry for being a bother, I want to do my research before I order accessories for my setup.

I'm not sure, and to be honest, I don't really want to mess with my setup right now since everything is working. I'm fairly certain that the audio control is done through the HDMI cables and not directly from the remote, since I never told my Xbox what
the make/model of my receiver is. It just figured it out when it was connected via HDMI.
