Question about Hard Drives, Old Games, New Games, and what to do.

    Hi!

We're totally new to the XBOX, and I haven't had a game console of any sort since my NES back in the '80s, so I've got a bit of catching up to do. We got a refurbished XBOX360S a couple weekends ago and my son and I have played through and LOVED Halo Reach.
We really want to go back and do the whole series and get to know that story line, but I'm in a small quandary.

Our 360 came (of course, duh) with no hard drive. I bought used copies of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo2 for very cheap and quickly discovered the whole phenomenon of needing an official MS hard drive to play the old games. And that's sort of the root
of my question: Is that the right thing for us to do?

I can get Halo: Combat Evolved as an Anniversary edition that's native to the 360. Wouldn't need to buy a hard drive to play that, so $10 for a different copy of that game vs... what? $75 for an official MS hard drive? All the other games in the series
are 360 games, so far, I think. Except I can't find an anniversary (360) version of Halo 2. (Is there one? Nobody seems to have it.)

If we really aren't going to be seriously into gaming, outside of following the Halo series, how important is having the hard drive? Is that something we really can't live without, and should get anyway, or am I going to buy a very expensive HD just to
    play two old games?

As it seems the newest games will all be on the XBOX One anyway, I'm not sure I want to sink money into this older unit...

    What would you do?

Thanks! Question about Hard Drives, Old Games, New Games, and what to do. :)

    :)

    HDD swap?

Hi new on here Question about Hard Drives, Old Games, New Games, and what to do. :)

    Ok hopefully a simple question…?

    1. New Xbox on Christmas day
    2. 2 days later Xbox broke (tray not staying shut and of course meaning no games to play)
    3. Today have had new Xbox delivered (cant complain about the service from Amazon)
    4. Still have old Xbox
    Question is…

As I haven’t exactly done much on my games etc do I “start a new” on the new hard drive so I know I have a new fully working Xbox or do I take the old hard drive out and put in new box?

    Thank you in advance.

  3. Copy games from my external Hard Drive to my new xbox one

    Hello everyone,

I am thinking about buying another xbox to play with my brother. My question is: will I be able to copy games from my external hard drive of my old xbox one to my new one and still be able to use the hard drive on my old one? The thing is that my internet
is pretty slow sometimes and it would be nice to not have to redownload all the games that are on the hard drive.

Question about Hard Drives, Old Games, New Games, and what to do.

Personally, even without backwards compatible games, I think it's worth it to have a hard drive. There are some 360 games that do require a hard drive in order to run as well, so it could be an issue you do run into at a later date. The only problem is,
it's harder to find official MS hard drives for the 360 these days. Ultimately, it's up to you.

You can still function without an official hard drive for the most part though. If you have a gold subscription, saves can be saved to the cloud and everything else to an external storage device.

Also, just a heads up, if you do decide to upgrade to a One in the future, the entire Halo series is available there.

  5. Offical MS HDD's can often be found at flee markets and pawn shops for cheap. The old version of Halo is imo, better than the newer version and is also still being sold on xbox market place. (360 console - signed into XBL > games > browse games - etc) Not
sure if the digital version requires an official MS hdd or not, but its best to have an official hdd as lots of origional xbox disc games are backwards compatable on the 360 console.

Contrary to popular belief, the old phat style hdds will work on the newer 360's and can often be found for less than 20 bucks. (search youtube) 20 gb is all you need and if you need more than that, later in life you can add up to two 2TB USB external drives
    if you wish.

    Thank you both!

I did find a hard drive for not too much money and the original games seem to work just fine on it.

    Much appreciated!

Can't play games off of an external hard drive

    Hey there Isometric!

Sorry to hear about the hard drive issue! Before we get to troubleshooting, I have a few questions.

    1. What is the brand and model number of the hard drive that you are using?
    2. Has the external hard drive you are using worked with games and apps previously?
    3. For clarification, have you tried installing a game straight to hard drive as well as moving a game from the internal drive?
Post back with the answers to those questions and I will do my best to help you get this issue sorted! :D
