Question about getting past the "security" keeping me out of my account

Sorry to hear it. This is one of the main reasons that you should create your own account with your own email address.

If your friend cannot help you remember the password then there's not much that anyone here will be able to do to help you as passwords are not stored on the system. They are unique to each person.

It still doesn't excuse the fact that they locked me out of my account.

It still doesn't excuse the fact that that Xbox live cant do anything about email accounts. When they are directly tied to xbox live

I answered my security question and gave them my console ID. It wasn't enough.

We would like to let you know that no one here in Microsoft Community sends out code for any phone number or email address shared to the public. We have been encouraging everyone not to share email address, full name, complete home address, and phone number, for their protection and security.

Should you mean you are trying to verify your identity by sending verification code to your phone number through text and you were not receiving it. You may try to restart your phone, turn on airplane mode and turn it off after 3 seconds, send text to yourself or ask someone you know to text your number.

What we can do here is to first understand the sign in issue you are encountering before we move on and use the different account for accessing Microsoft Services.
