Question about a water damaged power brick.

A friend of mine recently had a flood hit his basement and his power brick got completely submerged (luckily the Xbox was elevated so it didn't get any water on/in it), but when he unplugged it he unplugged it from the Xbox first and then the wall.

I know that Xbox One power bricks have surge protectors built in.

My question is that if the damaged power brick were to be replaced with a new one would the Xbox work just fine or could it possibly damage the new power brick?

Sorry if this is a dumb question or not but we're just really curious about whether or not he should bother replacing just the power brick or the whole thing.

    :)

Question about a water damaged power brick.

    Hi there!

Your question is actually pretty hard to answer. If the brick itself is now not working then the Xbox should boot up with another one. That said, if the brick sent a surge to the Xbox it could have damaged the console too. I would suggest going to the link
below and requesting a power supply. If the console doesn't work with the power supply then they will likely need a new console.

What are the chances that it sent a surge to the Xbox though, since the power brick has a surge protector built-in? The Xbox itself wasn't on when this happened (probably should have mentioned that as well lol).

Also, is there a chance if the Xbox did get hit by a surge that it could potentially harm a new power brick?

Question about a water damaged power brick.

    > What are the chances that it sent a surge to the Xbox though, since the power brick has a surge protector built-in?

Term 'surge protection' is a vague and subjective expression that says something exists - but does not say what. The expression say nothing useful for a technical conclusion.

Electronics are soldered and then washed with water. Water does not damage electronics. But water must dry before powering electronics. You (apparently) did not do that. So water may have made connections even across large safety gaps from 120 volt AC
to low voltage DC. You powered an electronically modified circuit.

Power supplies have overvoltage protection so that a supply does not damage its load (ie Xbox). However you may have compromised those protection circuits with water. Meaning they may not have been robust enough.

Nothing on a load can damage a power supply (to answer your last question). And nothing in a power supply can damage the load (Xbox) - except when you modified the design with water.

If an Xbox is undamaged, then a new supply will work just fine. Meanwhile, ignore the expression surge. You did not have a thousands volt spike trying to find earth via your Xbox. You had (at worst) an overvoltage. Something so low that even a surge
protector strip would ignore it (since it did not well exceed 330 volts).

Now, learn from the mistake. Power brick must be dry before being powered. One popular trick is to store it in a sealed container of rice - for weeks. Since electronics are not damaged by water. But electronics can be destroyed if powered when still
    wet.
