servers up and running 24/7, 365 days a year all around the world is costly.
It wouldn't be fair to make an exception for free to play games when normal games also need to pay for a subscription to play online.

Microsoft rewards/Bing rewards. If this is available in your region, this allows you to accumulate
points from searches that everyone nowadays does and get points from purchases of games, DLC etc. With the points you can then turn around and purchase Xbox live gold subscription. With an Xbox Live Gold subscription you also get other benefits like, Free
Games with Gold and Deals with Gold.
