Q: How do you counter shadow attacks?

I understand how you can use combo breakers to interrupt your opponent's combos, but I can't figure out how to counter shadow attacks mid-combo. People have told me that it's MP+MK, but I can't seem to get that to work, even offline in practice mode. What
am I doing wrong?

You have to make sure you time it right. I believe making sure you hit MP + MK as the last hit lands. Example, Sadira's Shadow Spin Move I think has 5 hits, so count 1, 2, 3, 4, MP+MK. I'm not too good at explaining but hope that helps.

 

Okay, I'll give that a try; still, that's disappointing to hear. Even if I counter it, I'll still take most of the damage from all but the last hit... =(

 

Well you press MK+MP at the right time while your blocking against the Shadow attack (no damage other than some chip).

 

Well that explains why I still couldn't get it to work after 30 min. of trying. You could've mentioned blocking 1st BEFORE I ripped all of my hair out!

I'll rephrase: Is there a way to counter a shadow attack mid-combo similar to a counter-breaker (which doesn't require blocking) if you didn't block the combo in the 1st place?

 

My bad, I thought it was common knowledge to block (I watch a lot of Max's videos lol). And no, you can only do a Shadow Counter if your blocking, other than that it's just a regular combo breaker.

 

@aCruzin had it right but it goes that way for if you block first or not. You can press MP + MK on either the first hit of a shadow move (massively hard timing) or the last hit of the shadow move (much easier timing). You must have at least a bar of shadow
meter yourself to be able to do it. If you get caught in the move without blocking when you shadow counter you still negate almost all of the potential damage applied and take almost no damage.

 

@ xCharonx, I'm not sure what you mean by the 2nd half of you post - if I don't block, I can't get the shadow counter to work at all.

@ tCruzin4lyfe, I don't generally watch Max's videos, although I do know who he is. With the last part of your last post, are you suggesting I could counter a shadow attack with a regular combo breaker (if so, which one) or that I could just use a combo breaker
at another point in the combo (that's not a shadow attack)? Because I gotta say, if it's the latter - that's 1 of my biggest weaknesses.

This game moves so fast compared to other fighting games, I have a hard time determining which attacks are light, medium, or heavy to counter-break effectively. If I could just get used to doing that, my game would get so much better it would be ridiculous.

I've gone through most of the dojo, but even so, I also have a hard time remembering a lot of the mechanics for countering certain things, since there seems to be just about a counter for everything (I mean come on, there's even a counter-counter breaker for
crying out loud). If you guys (or anyone for that matter) could give me a quick run-down of some of those mechanics or point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. To make things easier on you if you do, I've been playing fighting games for years,
so I'm familiar with a lot of the fighting game basics like wake-ups, cross-ups, overheads, spacing, frame data, etc.

 

Yes you can do a regular combo breaker during a Shadow move but it requires timing.

 

I think my edit time is running out but I would highly recommend watching Max's videos on YouTube. No need to subscribe if you do not care to but he has a Killer a Instinct assist video and he has Week Of.. Vids using a different character each week. Watching
him and just fighting the AI helped a lot.

 

Yeah. I made a mistake. It is only while blocking. I thought I saw @counterhitter pull a shadow breaker without blocking but I was wrong. Sorry. Max's Assist ME series on YouTube is great for basics and then he goes in depth for each character. In my opinion,
if you are "maining" a character, study your hit reactions. Ex Thunder will always have the same animation to any light hit or light kick. No matter who he is fighting. Until you get more familiar with everyone's move set and your opponents popular patterns,
this helps be more consistent on your countering.

 

I'll try watching his videos, tCruzin4lyfe, but I don't usually have a lot of time to do things like that on account of school work & such, so it may take a while. As for studying the characters animations, xCharonx, I do that already, but I've only been
doing it by looking at who I'm fighting and studying their attacks, not at who I'm playing, so I think that will definitely help out a lot with the counter-breakers since that gives me less to look at (3 animations for each kind of reaction from an attack
rather than 10+ attack animations per character). Thanks! Also, I'll ask again - if you can use a regular combo breaker during a shadow attack, which one do you use - there's 1 for light (LP+LK), 1 for medium (MP+MK), & 1 for heavy (HP+HK) if I recall.
