Putting a digital game onto my external disk

You can't install a disk onto an external save device.

You set his xbox at his mums house to his 'home' xbox then everything will sync accross when he signs in, including games if bought digitally. If he has physical disks he will have to bring them with him.

Yes an external drive can be used, but again only digital copies can be fully stored on it. make sure it's USB 3.0 and above 250gb it will get formatted to xbox and can be hot swapped between xboxes. You can preload the disk data onto the external drive
but would still need the physical disk.

This is to prevent piracy, it's a good reason to go digital

Lastly for clarity all xbox one saves are in the cloud and on the machine so if you login somewhere else it will update from the cloud.

Not sure if you fixed it already but I was having the same problem. However it was with Samurai Showdown. I have the Xbox version but of course the beautiful free upgrade that comes with it is necessary these days. I put the game in and was asked about the upgrade, said yes and bam. Installation stopped. So what I found that helped me is this. Not sure if you have an external hard drive but this is what I did.

I put my external hard drive as the default because of the amount of xbox games I have that aren't capable with the series x upgrade. Uninstall the game and put the disk in and reinstall it onto your external hard drive. if it asks, say yes to the upgrade, it will then ask if you would like to put the game on the internal storage so that it works better. Put install onto the external hard drive anyways. It will then start installing. Once finished, go to your external hard drive and move it into the internal hard drive and now let that beautiful upgrade happen. Now you have your game installed and your upgrade happening as well. Not a problem, I am more than happy to explain this to you. Once you get another external HD all you need to do is when signed in on your profile you will go to my games and apps (on home screen just go down one). Once there, you will go to ready to install
this shows you all your digital games, you can then choose which games you want to install. You will choose where you want to install to internal or external HD. This is the easiest way to install them all again. As for disk games once you have the external
HD just put the disk in and install to the external HD.

there is a way. I have bought the digital copy and preordered the game. I am allowed to download the game before release. I can now copy and move the game to my external hard drive. then I can bring the hard drive over to my friends house he can copy and
paste on his xbox. now he has the game allready preinstalled when you put your game in it will play instead of resinstalling since the preinstall will ask for a disk if you tried to play it with out disk
