put redemption code on wrong ID

We have a family account. Got my son an xbox. It came with 1 free month of xbox live gold. I thought since the family account showed him and the xbox under my account that I could put the redemption code in while logged on as me. It will be my credit
card after that month is up. When he gets on xbox now, it doesn't recognize that we got xbox live. Is this because I was logged on as me when I put the code in? If so, can it be transfered to him?

Thank you. It seems to have cleared up after I logged into the xbox in addition to him. I had managed our accounts on my laptop, and that's where I put the code in. I thought it would automatically transfer, but it didn't until I logged in on the xbox
itself.

The thing is that it's not an windows live id it is a yahoo account that was put in wrong

you code should be recognised here, if it is not (the wrong size/ doesnt fit), then this is not a MS redemption code.
