    For months I've been trying to claim a gamertag without the "suffix" of numbers after it. Having no luck of the GT freeing up I start to get frustrated. Knowing that an account that's been what it looks like to me inactive for years with no friends, no info, no profile pic, no social status still able to hold on to that GT is frustrating especially when I'm a dedicated gamer and subscription holder for many years. I know it sounds like I'm overreacting but its something that would make my life easier trying to market a brand without having 10 different social tags. I know I'm not the only one experiencing this too. So hopefully we can bring awareness to this issue and make it possible in the near future.

    Purge all inactive users?

    As of 2016, if a person doesn't sign into their Xbox account for 5 years, the tag will be freed up. As of August 30, 2019, if a person doesn't sign into their Microsoft account within 2 years, the account will be closed which should also free up the tag. So if the account truly is inactive, it will be freed up at some point. But there is no way to know exactly when that will happen or if the account truly is inactive. Just because it's not in use on an Xbox doesn't mean it's not in use elsewhere.

    When does Microsoft deem an account inactive long enough to warrant that "purge" of inactive gamer tags?

    Does not matter if an account is inactive or not gamertags are only purged and made available rarely by Microsoft.
