I've been gaming since day one, started on Ti-99, I'm a technologist with 20 years experience running business networks.

Problem:

I beta test almost everything I can and often run in to problems with Router ports locking up in NAT or UPNP failures among other massive issue with Halo MCC, Halo 2, 3... At each point during support regardless if it's ISP, Xbox, Microsoft, Verizon... NAT
and Router always get blamed and are the escape goat for bad programming and support. So I removed them. Here's how.

Why we can break the rules:

Why don't we need NAT? NAT is a basic security function and way of managing the massive demand for Ports but only having a supply of 65500 of them. When gaming we don't need security or port management because those cause major issues. So it's ok to eliminate
them. However, all other devices like computers and laptops must be protected.

Solution:

Don't use a router on your gaming network, I'm directly cabled to my Cable Modem on Charter therefore my xbox one has a Public IP Address. No more NAT.

I'd suggest you try this if you can't play games. Have restricted NAT or Moderate NAT and Port forwarding fails or DMZ fails, you don't want to program your router... You're Lazy. You have other gaming issues.

Just plug directly into your modem to test or use a network switch. If you'd like to keep your current setup as-is but your modem only has 1 network port (RJ45) buy a 5 Port Gigabyte Network Switch costs $30.

I use a Gigabyte Network Switch cabled like this. Cloud-Charter-Cable Modem-Network Gigabyte Switch-XboxOne

I also then plug my Router into that switch to run everything else in the house. This way I can unplug the router and eliminate everything except my xbox when gaming.

This also stops Support from always claiming it's a NAT issue or my router because I'm not using one! #1 statement from ISPs is "it's your router"

*NOTE for this to work for your both your Xbox and Router at the same time your ISP must allow DHCP to assign more than 1 public IP address per account. Charter does but Qwest, CenturyLink and many others do not. This will not work if you are using a MODEM/ROUTER
combo like Comcast has. In both Qwest, Century Link and Comcast requesting your modem/router be switched to TRANSPARENT MODE or BRIDGED mode will solve and bypass this problem, this will force the combo device to only act as a transparent modem (Please google
how to do this or comment below for help). If the ISP allows more than 1 public IP address then you can use a Network Switch to give you more physical network ports, most modems only have 1 (Some ISP charge more for a block of IP addresses, if you get a block
of Public IP addresses it must be of 8 as 4 wont be enough due to overhead. 4 has 2 usable but your modem needs one and your router needs one leaving none for the xbox. 8 has 4 usable so you can have Modem, 2 Xboxes and a Router.

So it would look like this Cloud-ISP-Bridged Modem-Switch-XboxOne (Plug Router in to the second Switch Port for your house computers, any other Xboxes should be in switch) [All Computers MUST be behind {plugged into or wireless} the ROUTER or be at risk,
Never ever put a computer or laptop in the Switch as there's not firewall on the switch network]

**NOTE What if I need Wifi to get my xbox online. I can't wire?

Then get a second router and change it to Access Point Mode instead of router mode (I'd suggest a ASUS 1900, 2400) then plug the WAN port of Access Point into the switch. (Program this wireless name (ESSID) for Xbox only use, setup a very store wireless
password as you only need to enter it once per device. Never use this wireless for Computers, Laptops or anything you care about. As there will be no firewall to protect it)

That would look like this. Cloud-ISP-Modem-Switch-AccessPoint~wifi~XboxOne (Plug your router into the switch to give protected access to the rest of the house and devices) Make sure the Public/External Wireless isn't the same ESSID/Wifi Name or Password
as the internal protected wifi.

If you're getting a strict NAT I would suggest first following this
NAT error solution. If you run through that guide and still have issues, follow the forum post here. Also, something to keep in mind, if you're running two consoles and you've done port forwarding or DMZ rather than using UPnP, this could cause one console
to always resolve strict NAT. I'm not sure what your home network setup is like, but that could be a possibility.
