    Project Scorpio Monitor Discussion

I know the Scorpio reveal is only a few days away but I thought I would start this thread to talk about monitors that will fully support the specs of the new Xbox. As far as I can tell, for gaming monitors anyway, there are only a few monitors out there
that support freesync at 4K with 1ms response time. But I believe the Scorpio will have FreeSync 2? Currently the closest monitors I can think of is the non-released ASUS PG27UQ and Acer XB272-HDR but these have G-SYNC.

Do any known monitors support 4K, 1ms response time, HDR, FreeSync 1/2 and at least 60Hz?

I am not positive but I think through HDMI the Scorpio can only support 60Hz unless I missed something. Guess we will find out Sunday.

Lastly, who ever will be buying the console, is anyone else upgrading their monitors?

Are you going to sacrifice anything when looking for monitors?

If the console works more like a PC, why not get a 2k monitor, 144Hz, 1ms and HDR and FreeSync 1/2 since the 4k monitors are harder to find from my searching around.

    :)

    Project Scorpio Monitor Discussion

Xbox Scorpio will not beat high end PC gaming specs. The Xbox Scorpio only has a 2.3Ghz clock speed 8 core processor. And this low clock speed will be the bottleneck when it comes to simulation games, since simulation games are more CPU intensive than GPU.
Even my i7-6700k has a stock speed of 4.2Ghz (4 cores, 8 threads, 8MB cache). And clock speeds do matter.

As for monitors, I'm completely fine with my Sony KDL40EX720 Full HDTV. 1080p gaming is still the norm. If you go for 4k, then you're gonna get less frame rate than if you play in 1080p. 1080p still looks pretty good. A lot of games on Xbox 1 aren't even
1080p native. You don't have to waste your money on the latest most flashiest monitor on the market. When the Full HDTV or full HD monitor you already use, will do the job well enough. I'm sure Xbox Scorpio will have anti-aliasing too (a mechanic which works
to reduce common jagged corners and lines in Graphics). Samsung and Sony are good brands. They may not be the cheapest, but there's a good reason why they're not the cheapest. They may tend to have a lower fail-rate compared with other brands. And may have
better global customer support than other brands too. Take for instance Samsung and Sony. They are not New Zealand or Australian companies, but they have good support coverage over here. You cant say the same for some other American companies.

  5. Isn't it Sony and Samsung that collaborate and displays are the same wiht just different housings?

    If looking for 27" monitors - it's more like a personal PC monitor watching at 0.5m - not a 50"-60" at 2m.

Mike Cerny at Sony recommended 60" monitor as minimum for 4K - and this is presumed about 2-2.2m which is common watching distance in a living room.

And that is four times the distance compared to PC - and eyes will not see a difference at 0.5m of a monitor half size being 4K.

I watch a lot of tv-series and films on dvd, and since a couple of months also bought some on bluray.

What happend is that you see some extra clarity on bluray - but it differs from scene to scene - if made in studio or outdoors etc.

So what you start to discover is differences in camera equipment - and what do you need that for anyway.

DVD upscaled to my 1080p monitor looks great, for series shot with modern equipment. But you can see a difference to bluray when best equipment is used.

Going 4K the difference will only be visible to naked eye on large enough screens - and much smaller difference full hd to 4k since we are so close to what eyes can resolve anyway.

So I would not worry about getting 4K just to get Scorpio. If my current monitor breakes I will most probably buy another 1080p monitor. I now used a 47" LG for a couple of years and is really satisfied with that - liking both quality and now menues and
remote is equipped and layed out. Watching distance 2.2m and doing racing games with hood or bumper camera I get butterflies in stommac from speed going fast - what more can you ask for in thrill.

And HDR is what I do a bit on my cameras - when lighting conditions are exceptional. There are certain ways to look at histograms in camera to tell whether there is a broad range of lightings where it counts - read some tips on that in a magazine just the
other day. So I do a lot of bracketing, camera taking many pictures with difference exposures, and afterwords decide if to do HDR on it or not.

So is there in game engines really such a need for HDR?

A monitor can only display blackest black to whitest white anyway. You can get smoother gradients with 10-bit compared to 8-bit - but does it really tell that much.

HDR can be described as exposure compression mapping every part of image into the blackest black to whitest white. That is how eyes work when moving over a view and our eyes adjust to every exposure there is to reveal more details in every part, as our eyes
move. But since a picture or image on screen don't know where you look - the full image is adjusted in every spot. Darkest areas are lifted in light to see what is there, and brightest part lowered in lighting to also reveal more details in those areas. But
most of what you watch is not that kind of lighting anyway.

I saw introduction of PS4 Pro and an image with HDR - and they really exaggerated that difference quite a bit, probably to see a difference on such a internet broadcast and normal monitors, don't know.

But many things combined probably makes a difference, latest technology, 4K and HDR - it brings something extra I'm sure, for video in real life surroundings. For game engines it would be all about if generated images makes a difference in this regard. They
probably adjusted to make things visible that must be visible.

If it's not project Scarlett then they will definitely do a project Scarlett edition like they did with Scorpio
