    Project Scorpio Memory specs

    Hi,

I'd like to give some information about the new Xbox One Scorpio regarding it's yet to be released Memory amount (and it's good information), so here we go:

In the Teaser trailer we saw at E3, we saw the unveiling of the console. We saw a lot of studio heads and Xbox officials talking about the device in the video. The trailer also shows the insides of the console, though in a very limited fashion. However,
it also shows the memory set-up for the console, that a lot of the media and players in general have missed out on. They simply haven't picked it up. So lets' analyse the Video to find the amount of RAM the console will have:

So, we see the consoles insides for the first time. Mainly we can see the APU (CPU and GPU on 1 die) in the center. We can also see the smaller RAM chips surrounding the APU.
Quite clearly, we can count most of those by pausing the video. We can count 12 small chips that surround the APU from that shot.

In the second shot, , we can see the RAM chips again, and closer. Note that one of the chips is missing due to the angle that the video is recorded at. Again, we can count 11 chips with the exception of that extra 1 that would make up 12.

I've highlighted this in a clear image here. The red highlight is simply for reference between both images.

So, there are two important factors in determining the amount of memory found the on the board:

    • We have 12 chips
    • The chips can hold 512MB (0.5GB), 1024MB(1GB) and rarely 2048MB(2GB) each
So, if we multiply 12 by 512(MB), we get 6,144MB. That is equal to 6GB of Memory. Now, we already know that the original Xbox One console holds 8GB RAM in 16 512MB chips

as shown here within the orange highlights.
It's fairly logical to say that Microsoft would not decrease the amount of RAM if they want a more powerful console. Therefore the only answer would be to upgrade to larger RAM chips to fit in the extra RAM. So
what we end up with are only 12 chips, but each measure in at double the capacity at 1024MB each, giving us a total of 12,288MB (12GB).

From that we can conclude that the console will have 12GB of RAM in this setup.
This is the most important gain:

3/4GB for the 3 Operating Systems and 9/10GB for games.
Now remember that the original only had 5GB for games, because 3GB was reserved for the 3 OS'.
What we see here is actually more like a double in Memory for games, even though we only gained another 1/3 in the upgrade!

As a side note I have to say that the PS4 Neo is going to struggle getting close to 4K, because it only has 8GB of RAM. No matter what type of RAM it is, it will always struggle when their isn't capacity. There is no way that console is built for 4K native,
    but only 4K Upscalling.

Thanks. Hope it helped people understand!

    :)

E3 2017 for more Xbox Scorpio info, is too far away!!

I'm more curious to know what it's gonna be called after they drop the "Project Scorpio" codename! Xbox One Two? Xbox 4K? Forget tech specs, this is the burning question!

It turns out that some game can run at 4K native (very few though) on the PS4 Pro (I think the recent Tomb Raider game can, and also The Last of Us)

Either way, I personally don't think 4K is that huge a leap over what we have now. Yes I know that its 4 times the pixel etc etc etc. But the leap from standard def to "HD" that we had on the 360 was HUGE, it was obvious to everyone. 1080p to 4K though,
when your sat 10 feet back from the screen, I don't really see that much difference (I have a 4K screen).

Personally I hope that the developers for games on the Scorpio give us choices, IE run the game 4K/30fps or run them at 1080p/60fps with more fidelity.

If they do I know which choice I will go for, and it wont be 4K.

  5. My sugestion to microsoft is to make the scorpio whit a VIDEO CARD SLOT.

Whit a posibility to swap the video card every 2 or 3 years Sony will colapse big time when they reveil the PS5.

The pc gamer whit no knolege also will be atract to xbox if the upgrade is idiot proof.

So to resume, PS5 will be more expensive versus a video card upgrade for xbox.

IF you steal my idea send me a xbox one s ...............a futur customer

    Erm........no.

Console games will already be split (those with the more powerful console and those without) with your idea that will become even worse.

You could have an Xbox Two with the base card, an Xbox Two with an upgrade card, and even an Xbox Two with an even more powerful card.

Plus to do this will require either a very special type of graphics card (so very expensive) or the case for the Xbox Two will be HUGE to accommodate normal PC graphics cards.

Also what about graphics card drivers? on PC that's no issue, on the console how can that work?
