Problems with Xbox Live gift card redemption

I gave my kids a gift card for 12 months of Xbox Live for Christmas. They redeemed the code on our Xbox through my son's gamertag. Then we realized the subscription is only available to him and not to our younger child. We thought it would work on the device
for both of them. Next my signed out of his gamertag and created a new one (I don't know why). Now they can't get to the Xbox Live feature at all. Unfortunately I don't really understand how any of this works but now I have two crying kids and I'm out $60.
I still have the code from the gift card. Please tell me there is some way to restore this subscription to one or both accounts. And what is up with not having an email address for support? How is the forums community supposed to be able to help me with this?

You would need to sign back into your son's original account in order to access the gold. If you don't remember the email that was used for the account, you would need to contact support and they can help you with that. 1-800-4my-xbox if you're in the US/Canada
or Contact Us | Xbox Support

If you're using a 360 console, gold cannot be shared and you would need to purchase gold for each account.

If you're using a One, your son who does have the gold subscription would need to set the console as his Home console in order to share the gold. My Home Xbox Setting on Xbox One | Share Your Xbox One

It's a little more complicated than that. He made a new gamertag but with the same email account, and somehow the Live subscription was attached to the old gamertag but was not appearing under his account. I found a place on the support site to enter my
phone number for a call back and the support agent was able to help. He found the Live subscription under the old gamertag and was able to verify it belonged to us. So he cancelled that subscription and gave us a new code to enter for the new gamertag. We
also got the Home console thing set up. Kids are happy now!

With Microsoft Rewards points you just go to their redemption page and redeem the points for either an Xbox gift card or a Live card (it's not possible to purchase gold using currency from gift cards through Xbox) and a code will be emailed to you. If you
need further assistance, you would need to contact customer support for the Microsoft Rewards program via their redemption page. They are not the same as the Xbox Rewards program.

The reason behind the $0.00 redemption is because it is a Xbox Live Gold Card, Not a Xbox Gift Card
