Problems with Xbox 360 games installed to hard drive

Lately I've been having issues with games installed to my hard drive. I've tried all the usual trouble shooting steps (checking connections, clearing cache, etc...) but the problem persists.

When playing games off of my hard drive textures will load in slowly, sometimes not at all.

Games will freeze and then sometimes un-freeze.

Sound will sometimes skip

Games have just strait up crashed my system.

Here's what I've figured out:

Some games are worse than others. Titanfall would just crash, Tomb Raider had a little skipping and stuttering during the opening scene and then seemed OK. Some games (generally smaller arcade games) seemed to be fine.

I tried to MOVE and COPY Titanfall to a USB stick I got an error that said it could not be completed.

I redownloaded Titanfall to the USB and it runs fine.

I'm at the point now where I'm sure SOMETHING is wrong, I just don't know if it's the console or the hard drive. If anyone knows anything about these issues and could help it would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't gotten that far in the campaign yet, but it sounds to me like you have a problem with your system or disc if it's freezing up a bunch. Every once and a GREAT while our xboxes will freeze mid-game, but it's few and far between. One thing you might want to try is to install the game to the hard drive. This may solve your problem. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

A recently purchased disc will not play.

Hi, for an original Xbox game to work on a Xbox 360, the console needs an official Xbox 360 hard drive installed in it. If you do not have an official hard drive installed, then the game will not play & come up with that error message.

My system also has been freezing up. I have the original white system xbox 360. I use a 250gb hard drive and a smaller 60g hdd. My system freezes when using either one. If I play the arcade or indie games, they're the only ones that don't freeze up.
All the games I play are downloaded to my hdd. I've tried clearing the cache as well as re-downloading the games (which I've done about 5 times). This does not seem to fix the issue. I bought it as a refurbished console, and it's been freezing since i
purchased it.

If more graphical intensive games are crashing your system more often, it could be due to heat. Move your console to a better ventilated area, and make sure that the dust vents are clear of any debris. If it still misbehaves, send the console in for repair.

As far as refurbished consoles, that's the risk you take. Sounds like heat though. Places that refurbish love taking shortcuts and don't fix things properly. (I'm looking at you Gamestop)

Just install the game to the hard drive, then it won't matter what DVD drive your console has, the game will run from the hard drive. No noise, no reading problems, faster loading. You'll still need the disc in the drive, but is only for anti-Piracy purposes.
Once you install a game on an Xbox 360, any 360, the game will entirely from the hard drive.

Hey Rusty,

I've seen this problem happen a couple of times where the Xbox 360 will continuously reboot upon trying to play/download/install a game. Usually, this points to a problem with the hard drive not being able to read/write to a certain portion of the hard drive.
You should be able to test this by removing the hard drive and trying to use a 16GB Flash Drive in its place and installing the game to that.

If you're able to play or install the game or games to the USB Flash Drive, it's likely that the issue is with the hard drive and not the console itself.

if you are trying to install them in an external hard drive for the xbox 360 then that might be the problem, if it is possible, try to install them in the internal hard drive of the console, once you do that try to start the apps and to check the external
hard drive is not damaged try to start a game from there

This is not an issue specific to Fallout NV. Because the 4GB internal memory is not an actual hard drive you will have this problem with any game. You will need an official Xbox 360 hard drive in order to install the game or it's DLC.

I never said you can't install games onto the hard drive, you cannot install original Xbox games onto your hard drive. There is a difference between original Xbox games and Xbox 360 games. All Xbox 360 games that have discs can be installed to the hard drive
(assuming you have space). Original Xbox games cannot.
