It depends on what you're trying to buy. The One/website have never been updated to work with the Microsoft account balance for 360 content. You would have to use a 360 in order to buy 360 (or original Xbox) content. If it's One content, you should have

How on earth could the brains behind microsofts windows 10 forget about their own system people use to buy Microsoft products? After all it is a Microsoft account not so much of xbox account. Anything Microsoft you can buy it from apps to games in the Microsoft
store. Thats like a store not having a cash register because they forgot people would be paying in cash.

Will I still need to buy Microsoft points cards every time to add money to my account or is this the same feature that Sony doing.

I'm concern regarding buying DLC and Games on demand when using real cash instead of microsoft points.

The best solutions would to be either buy him a physical copy of the game, order online and get it sent to his address, or buy him a Microsoft cash card which he can redeem on his account and use to buy a digital copy.
