Problem with Xbox live connection

I've just moved into a new place to start college, naturally I brought my Xbox with me. It was close enough to the router, so I'm connected through Ethernet. However, since day one, I've had a problem in-game with my connection. I can normally join a game,
but when I do so, everyone skips around, voices lag, and it makes it almost unbearable to play. I figured then, no harm done, I'll just play single player and talk to my friends in the party. But of course, even when just playing single player in just about
any game, my friends' voices cut in and out, and I can't understand what they are saying until I dashboard, and even then they cut out every once in a while. I was running at 3 Mbps and somewhere around .30-.40 Upspeed. I've now upgraded to 6, with a new antennae
or whatever device they've attached to the roof, and they told me that it was the latest upgrade so since nobody really has it yet, I was kicking at around 9 Mbps with an up of 3 or more. I tried Xbox once again, and it seems like absolutely NOTHING changed.
I've tested my internet speed from my laptop while Live was running and it drains me down to 1 or 2 mbps with an Upspeed of something so low I don't even recall. I don't know if my Xbox connection, for some unnatural reason, requires a TON of internet to sap,
or something somewhere isn't working in sync with something else. I've consulted countless threads, and nobody either seems to share my exact issue, or if they have even nearly the same issue, it hasn't been answered yet. I'm hoping this will shed some light.
I've checked my LAN type to find that it is indeed open.

Keep in mind, I am not very tech savvy. This house is also not mine, so I do not have the password to the router. I've only suggested the internet upgrade specifically so I could play Xbox and maybe check Facebook while doing so. Any attempt to change things
by typing my IP address into an internet browser is cut short when it asks for a username and password, because I do not have access to said information.

If somehow, I can work around that, ANY suggestions are (to me) necessary, and VERY much appreciated.

If it helps at all...

Router model: Netgear Wireless G Router WGR614V10 (I understand it's old, if that's an issue, please inform me.)

Desktop that the router is directly linked to is Windows 7, laptop is Windows 8.

Any more desired specs you need, please specify and I'd be happy to try and find them with my tiny computer brain.

:)

I cant play Destiny?

I'm having the exact same problem.....this is such f***ing BS. I'm connected to the internet...xbox live is working fine on the rest of the system, and yet I'm stuck in a permanent cycle of "Attention: this game requires a connection to Xbox Live" notice. This is ridiculous.

connection problem with xbox live.

Console bans can not be appealed nor reversed. Your only option is to purchase a new console and then follow the rules as set out in the Terms of Use and Code of Conduct to avoid any future enforcement actions against your account or console.

Hi there

just a wild guess, but have you tried resetting your network settings on the console to factory defaults.

1.Press the Guide button on your controller, select Settings, and select System Settings.

2.Select Network Settings.

3.Select Wired Network or the name of your wireless network when the network list is displayed.

4.Select Configure Network.

5.On the Additional Settings tab, select Restore to Factory Defaults. When prompted, select Yes, Restore to Factory Defaults.

Ok, It was worth the shot. Is the Xbox console connected by wire or wireless. If it is wireless could you try a wired connection to see if that changes anything. ( if it is possible to try ofcourse)

It is directly wired to the router, which is sort of where my sense of "how is my connection so awful" comes from. The only thing I can think of is an old router, because doubling my internet speed didn't seem to make ANY drastic change.

How is the router connected to the internet? Also via network/Ethernet cable, if so can you try connected the Xbox console directly to that cable, so basically remove the router in between to see if that makes any difference

I actually tried removing the router completely and using the Ethernet cable that comes from the plate in the wall directly, it was the first thing I tried. No go, unless I *** something up. And the router is connected to, like I said, a plate that travels
to the roof where there's a small antennae.

I don't know if this would make a difference, but there IS a small black box with an Ethernet port with arrows going in either direction that the Ethernet cable from the Xbox plugs into, then the box plugs into the router. It may be nothing but a small extension
for length purposes, but it may act as something else. If you know what it may be, I could try removing it.

Is there any make and or model number on it?

One completely different thing. Could you try another profile (xbox live account) on your xbox console.

Or a friend (with a gold subscription) who can download their profile to your console, to check if the issue is somehow profile related

Or try your console and router at a different place.

This try and determine the part that may be causing this.
I could try removing it.
Please do, and have your console directly wired to the router instead and verify if you can connect properly.

If you don't notice any significant change, please, go ahead and perform a basic IP connectivity test (ping), using your computer, as the tool for this test. Here's how:

For Windows: Open up the command prompt (on Windows press "Windowskey + R", then type "cmd" and press Enter.).

In the black window that opens, type:

ping www.google.com -t

For Mac: Choose spotlight and type terminal: in the Terminal window, type:

ping www.google.com

Go ahead and use your Xbox, as you normally would do, and let us know if you see any significantly changes to those series of echo replies, whenever you got dropped from LIVE, or experience extensive latency. Or, even better, if you can
post up those series of echo replies that you see on the screen.

Thank you!

Problem with Xbox live connection

WPAK:

Not on the black box. Just a female Ethernet port, and a male one that says goes into the computer, while the Ethernet chord itself goes from the box to the router. There black box also plugs into the outlet, maybe I should have mentioned that earlier. If
I could post a picture, (Or figure out how to) I would.

I have another profile on here, but no live on it. I'll get to this suggestion when a friend agrees to try it with me.

I don't think location is the issue. If you're talking long rage, like bring to another house entirely, where I USED to live, live ran extraordinarily. Only since I moved into the new place does this happen. That's why I'd like to think it's a hardware issue
that I'm hoping can either be resolved or improved.

taidara:

Turns out the black box is required because as soon as I unplugged it, the router couldn't connect to the internet. AND, I just realized, it doesn't play a part in the chord that goes from my xbox to the router, it's actually a completely different port
that I was thinking of, so the XBOX is and was already directly connected to the router, so forget about the black box, I'm just going crazy.

I used the CMD and typed in the ping thing, and it jumped around mostly between 12-20 ms.

I started up the Xbox, connected to live, and even started up an online game (I used Dark Souls) and got around the same results, but the request timed out much more often.

Ok, not sure if you tried already, but can you try a different cable to connect the xbox to the router, like for example the one that is currently used between router and PC. Also if there are different ports on router try using a different one.

The increase in time outs could be something, but let's wait for taidars's response
