Problem with Xbox 360/Xbox Backward Compatibility

I have an Xbox 360, and I've been trying to use a copy of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic from the original Xbox, but I can't seem to get it to work.

I have updated the system with what I think is the current most recent update (version 2.0.17511.0). When I put the game in, its name comes up on the menu, but when I click on it it says, "This original Xbox game is not supported on your Xbox 360 console.
An update to support this game may be available. For more info, go to www.xbox.com/games"

There is also a clickable message that says "This original Xbox game has not been c..." but gets cut off there and just brings me back to the console's main menu.

I did go to xbox.com/games for more info, but it was mostly about Xbox One and all the newer stuff. However I have seen things elsewhere on the site saying that I need to update the console software (which I have), make sure it is on the list of supported
games (which it is), and have an official Xbox 360 hard drive (which I do).

It is also worth noting that I do not have Xbox Live, and I have not tried any other original Xbox games.

So, I was just wondering if anyone else has any suggestions.

Am I doing something wrong? Are there other updates? Am I late to the party and out of luck? Or is fate just not in my favor?

My Account won't stay connected to xbox live on backwards compatibility.

I'm having a problem with backwards compatibility. My xbox live account disconnects from xbox live when I attempt to log in on the 360 menu on backwards compatibility for Xbox one.

Ah, now just read through your post again so now I see the problem.

You need to be connected through the internet to Xbox Live to download and install the updates for your console.

You should be able to do this without the need for a gold subscription though.

So does it not work to install it from a cd?

 

You also need to make sure that you have an official xbox 360 hard drive. There are many drives sold on amazon that might look official but aren't and therefore they lack the backwards compatible firmware.

 

The update is not on the game disc, it has to be downloaded through XBL

 

No, I meant I got the update files from the website, burned them onto a cd, then put that in my xbox and installed it from there.

 

I'm pretty sure I have one.
