    Problem migrating Minecraft Mojang to Microsoft Account


    Son had a mojang minecraft account. We were prompted to migrate it and we did this, following the instructions. After we were taken to his microsoft account it prompted him to accept a different gamertag. His existing mojang gamertag didn't appear. He set up his new gamertag and completed the migration. Now, when he goes to the launcher site it goes to a new blank account and invites him to buy minecraft. His mojang account was registered to my email address but he migrated to his own microsoft account. He can get onto his actual minecraft account from minecraft.net but he can't launch his account and play the game from there because the launcher is now loading the new gamertag account. What do we do? How does he retrieve his old gamertag and gaming history for minecraft? TIA

    When you purchased the Minecraft Java originally, did you purchase it with a Mojang account or a Microsoft account? If you purchased it with a Mojang account, have you tried migrating the account to a Microsoft account yet? You can learn more about migrating your Mojang account to a Microsoft account here:

    You can also try installing the Minecraft launcher through the Xbox app and installing Java from there.

    Did you have two mojang accounts (one with Java and one with Bedrock), or did you have one mojang account (which had Java) and one Microsoft account with Minecraft for Windows, and you migrated this mojang account with Java to the Microsoft account that had Minecraft for Windows?

    I ask because you cannot migrate two mojang accounts to only one Microsoft account. So if you had one mojang account with java and one mojang account with bedrock, you migrated them to two different Microsoft accounts.

    To begin, Microsoft accounts can only link to one Mojang account. Multiple Java Mojang accounts need to be migrated to separate Microsoft accounts.

    Thank you for posting on the Xbox Communities Forum. In early 2021, Mojang started the process of migrating Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts. This was done as Microsoft's account system is more secure, and to make it easier to sign in.

    This migration period ended on September 19, 2023. To ensure all your Minecraft account data transfered to your Microsoft account, you had to migrate your account before this date. However, players were given another chance to transfer their Minecraft license to a Microsoft account via the post-migration process.

    The post-migration ended on December 18, 2023, and it is no longer possible to sign in with a Mojang account or migrate to a Microsoft account. If you did not migrate your Mojang account to a Microsoft account before December 18, 2023, I'm afraid you will need to purchase Minecraft again using your Microsoft account. I apologise for any inconvenience caused by this.
