xbox live is having some issues so that may be the problem.
It worked earlier for me and there was a monetary value for each of the Gold bundles (no REQ points)

 

question about digital games without gold

hey guys I would like to give a 2 games to a good friends kids they don't have gold...would that be a problem gifting them mega man and raymond legends without gold will it work?? I'm clueless I just assume everyone has gold but the kids are too young to b playing xbox live atm....thank you

in order to download Games with Gold for free, you will need a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription, any free trials will not count as Gold to allow purchasing those Games with Gold games for free

 

Base from what he said, his trial subscription is the 30 days trial subscription through the website. Then that means he's eligible to get the free games with gold.

His issue might be his gold not reflecting on his account properly since he shows as silver only right now.
