Prioritize online gaming traffic only?

Okay, so im wondering if theres a way I can set up router qos to prioritize only multiplayer gaming, while leaving downloads and other live data as regular traffic?

I share a connection with others, and we all have multiple devices using it at any given time. When I have the console set to higher priority than the rest of the devices, it kills bandwidth to everything but that console as long as it take for the the
enormous xbone game and dlc files to finish.. Often for days on end because the connection is only 6Mb/s. If I set it at a normal priority I get lag on multiplayer. Ideally I'd like to set the qos so the muktiplayer is high priority, but downloads are regular.
Ive searched but found nothing helpful, and from experience with live and networking over the years, im assuming the answer is simply 'it cant be done'.



As it stands, I have to go into the qos and manually downgrade console traffic setting until the dl finishes, then switch back to priority when finished, or if I just want to play online for a little bit. Its a huge hassle!

The only thing I can think of is to use ICS and Network Bridge on my laptop (normal priority device) and drop a cable to the console. But even then, im not sure if that would mask the console behind the network bridge/laptop network info, or if the router
would still detect the consoles info. Maybe somebody can shed some light on this of there's no other option to make something work.

Im too far away to run a cable, because I also considered setting wireless up as low for downloads and cable for high multiplayer. That still would require switching stuff around tho, cause the cable being plugged into the xbox disables the WiFi connection.
So that wouldn't be very effective anyway, and I'm looking for a solution that doesn't require me to rejigger my setup on a regular basis.

check your router settings. your router may be set to prioritize your internet traffic. specifically check your Qos settings

Sorry, no solution. My guess is that Microsoft is applying some kind of QOS to the connection that prioritizes chat so that it isn't interrupted by other traffic. I've noticed that even downloading demos has no effect on the party chat. While in theory this
is a good idea...in the real world you want the game traffic prioritized. Especially in FPS games. QOS will also add a small amount of lag just due to the packet processing.

Game chat definitely doesn't prioritize the chat channel. The quality difference between the two is very noticeable.

 

I would say it depends on the router. You should be able to check the user manual to see if that is an option on your router.

 

I have an a Asus RT-AC68U with dd-wrt, so I know it's an option if the info was available regarding which ip addresses and other connection info were available to the public. And if I could connect the ethernet and WiFi at the same time it would help because
then I could assign ports to different Mac addresses and prioritize or cap speeds according to those macs.
